It really depends on the person. This isn't something I talk about much, but fuck it, I was an opiate addict for about a decade through my teens to mid 20's. This was before the big fentanyl epidemic so it was a little different mind you, but I was pretty heavy in on it at one point. You think of anything available as an opioid back in those days and you could find me doing it, but conversely I never had a problem with anything else. Obviously having been a drug addict I tried other things of course and have done a little bit of everything, but I never had a problem or even much cared for anything that wasn't of the opiate class. With that said, I've been sober for nearly 15 years now and I still have a glass of wine with a good dinner when I'm out with my wife from time to time. I and others absolutely can occasionally use intoxicating substances without it turning into a full blown addiction and the idea that an "addict" is a personality trait that spills over into all areas of life may be true for a subset of people, but it is in no way true of ALL people who have been addicted to something. Most people I've known tend to only ever be addicted to one particular class of drug with a tendency toward indifference to most/all others. Now I will never touch anything related to an opiate again, I've even had major surgeries since becoming sober where I've refused all painkillers both during the surgery and in the aftermath (they just use a form of ketamine to keep you knocked out during the surgery when you request absolutely no mu-opioids), but I never had problems with anything else and the occasional glass of wine over the last 15 years hasn't sent me spiraling yet and I'm sure that so long as I have a loving wife, a fullfilling personal life and my faith, well I in no way foresee there being any problems related to addiction coming up in the future as well, even if I do casually imbibe alcohol once every few months or so and see no reason why this couldn't be true of Flesh as well. Until I see him going all in on a pillstream or engaging in obviously drug fueled ranting I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he's at least got that part of his life under control.
