I grew up near Pensacola, where all soft drinks are "Coke," even if they aren't.

I don't usually drink a lot of soda, but when I do its usually something refreshing like anything flavored lemon-lime.

The manliest way of calling these girly sweet drinks is "soft drinks". Needless to say I prefer drinking hard drinks. :heart-full:

I call the usual fizzy sugar water you buy at a supermarket pop, but the really high-class stuff that you find in glass bottles and whatnot? That's soda, which I always have seen as fancier.

I just say soda. My mom and sister are in the habit however of referring to all sodas as just Coke.

It's coke. It always has been coke it always will be coke. I should lock this thread for being so unnecessary, but your insistence to the contrary amuses me.

I alternate between soda, pop, and the name of the specific beverage.

Soda is what it's called around the area I live in.

Eh, it's more like "Hand me the Kleenex," or "Do you have a Band-Aid?"
Well, no, because when you use "coke" to describe all sodas, you're including things that taste substantially different. Not just Coke vs. Pepsi vs. RC vs. whatever store brand, but lemon-lime, orange, grape, whatever the fuck Mountain Dew is supposed to be, Dr. Pepper-style, all that shit.

So I'd say it's like saying "Yeah, I just got myself a new Ford. It's a Honda Civic." Or maybe "every Tuesday I go and get myself the newest Superman Marvel."

And then the people who call all sodas "coke" are the ones who get all gestapo about it. I've met people who call it pop, but they never give a shit if you call it soda. But god forbid you go down to cokeland and say soda or pop, it's all "BLARGLARGL IT'S COKE BLERBLERBLER"

Bullshit. I called it coke without realizing it one time to some people who call it pop, and they ganged up on me and have never let up. So yes, it's entirely pop people's faults that coke people are so grumpy.
