Sunday marks five years since George Floyd was pinned by his neck and killed by police in the streets of Minneapolis, sparking a historic wave of calls to action to end police brutality and racial injustice.

Since Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020, by Minneapolis police, crowds have trekked to the city every year on the anniversary of his death to pay their respects and celebrate his legacy.

On a weekend that is usually reserved for remembering fallen veterans, Floyd’s presence is everywhere in the Twin Cities — from author readings to prayer circles, concerts and more.

On Sunday, there are several planned events to honor Floyd’s life, with most of the major activities happening near the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue where he was killed. At what’s now known as George Floyd Square, scheduled events include a morning church service followed by an evening gospel concert — featuring popular local choir the Sounds of Blackness — and a candlelight vigil.

This year’s theme for the annual Rise and Remember Festival that celebrates Floyd’s life in George Floyd Square is “the people have spoken.”

“Now is the time for the people to rise up and continue the good work we started,” Angela Harrelson, an aunt of Floyd and board co-chair of the Rise and Remember nonprofit, said in a statement.

At nearby Phelps Field Park, a “Justice for George” exhibit will showcase plywood murals from 2020.

Floyd’s death ignited a worldwide movement not only to make changes in policing but also to address systemic racial inequities in other areas of society. However, the commitment to that global movement’s long-term legacy has been debated.

This year’s milestone anniversary is marked by a stark contrast in the political atmosphere and societal acceptance of policing reforms, equity and racial justice work that had been widely called for in the aftermath of Floyd’s death in 2020.
On Wednesday, the Department of Justice filed to dismiss a consent decree agreement with Minneapolis that was supposed to entail sweeping reforms. There have also been rumors that President Donald Trump, who was the president when Floyd was killed, might pardon former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted in Floyd’s murder. Publicly, Trump has given no credence to the rumors.

The Trump administration has also tried to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs throughout the country in public as well as private organizations.

struts in, puffin’ out chest feathers, tippin’ an imaginary Stetson

Well, I say, I say, gather ‘round, son, and lemme crow you the sorrowful tale of George Floyd’s untimely departure from this here barnyard of life, five years ago today, May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis. It’s a grim yarn, but I’ll spin it Foghorn Leghorn-style, so perk up them ears, boy!
There was George, just peckin’ along, mindin’ his own feed, when the law swoops in, claimin’ he passed a $20 bill phonier than a rooster’s promise to quit crowin’ at dawn. The head rooster of the cop coop, Derek Chauvin, struts up, all high and mighty, and pins poor George to the ground, I say, kneelin’ on his neck like a hog plopped on a hay bale! For nigh on nine minutes, boy—longer than it takes a hen to fuss over a cracked egg!
George, he’s squawkin’ loud as a foghorn, “I can’t breathe!”—plain as day, I say—but ol’ Derek’s knee’s clamped down tighter than a barn door in a hurricane. The other officers, they’re just standin’ there, cluckin’ like chickens watchin’ a weasel in the henhouse, not liftin’ a feather to help. George, he’s fightin’ for air like a catfish floppin’ on a dry creek bed, till his ticker gives out—stops cold, I say, like a tractor run outta diesel. Right there on the pavement, he’s gone.
That sparked a ruckus bigger than a fox convention in a chicken coop, with folks hollerin’ for justice, and Derek got his tailfeathers locked up for murder—caged tighter than a drum! That’s the tale, son, a sad one, told with a Foghorn flourish in memory of George.

struts off, head bowed, cluckin’ solemnly

My headcanon is that Derek Chauvin is the father of Shiloh Hendrix's children with the Burger King as the dad in law

Even Kiwis aren't immune to the oldfag curse of developing Troll's Remorse and becoming a left-wing bootlicker.
One of the things that didn't help was Keith Ellison sitting on the full footage for months. The footage showing Floyd freaking the fuck out in the back of the car and saying he couldn't breathe and wanted to be put on the ground.

I still can't believe he got buried in a gaudy gold casket. I don't even think the pope gets buried in something like that.

It's Hood Couture, so it's pretty on-brand, however insane the whole thing was, and still is.
One of the funniest things is that violent crime levels and murder rates have increased in Minneapolis post George Floyd and have never dipped below their pre Floyd level for a single year since.

Black people just decided to get together and make their own circumstances worse in order to own whitey.
Probably a result of the Broken Windows theory - the anarkiddie shit was never completely cleaned up, so the area has deteriorated further, which leads to more and more crime.

Recently someone on a tv show said “I can’t breathe” and I chuckled and my girlfriend got on my ass about how I’m too mean. Basically the first real fight in a 15 month relationship. We’re still a week later hardly talking.
I've been there, and to be completely honest with you it's only gonna get worse. Get out while you still can.

I fucking hate this nigger.
Recently someone on a tv show said “I can’t breathe” and I chuckled and my girlfriend got on my ass about how I’m too mean. Basically the first real fight in a 15 month relationship. We’re still a week later hardly talking. If I had lived at any other point in history and this bullshit happened I would not have been forced against my will to know his stupid damn retarded big lipped nigger face! George Floyd is the symbol of weaponized compassion. News isn’t learned anymore. It’s inflicted. I’m forced to have an opinion about George fucking Floyd. About Ukraine, about Gaza. If I don’t I’m seen as callous and evil. God damn this nigger and any fucking bastard seeds he may still have infecting this rotten world!

DO NOT BACK DOWN

If you do, your relationship will be irreversibly fucked. You will be expected to be sympathetic to every sob story and crying brown person picture from then on.

In that moment on the first day, I think it was reasonable to assume this might have been some over the top police brutality - especially for folks who have been locked inside and accosted by police for the past 2 months.

This is where I was at. I’d just been yelled at by a cop for babysitting a widowed friend’s kid and having THE TEMERITY to take the kid to the park and let him pull at the caution tape on the play structures.

The cop and his partner followed me and the kid for several blocks… I guess escorting us to make sure we didn’t try to play anywhere?

I was on board with Total Cop Death and was borderline ready to riot myself.

They burned down Uncle Hugo's/Uncle Edgar's. Fuck them for that.

Yeah, I remember being told to not leave my house or else, while watching massive crowds of rioters destroy cities and be praised for it. Thanks George Floyd, I'll never forget.
It was amazing. No idea how this didn't cause a mass awakening of normies. In a record time we went through:

- wuhan flu is a racist conspiracy theory, you are racist if you wear a mask, trump is racist for wanting to close the border
- you are racist if you don't wear a mask and want to leave your home
- voter ID laws are a crime against humanity
- actually it's a good thing if you can't leave your home without government ID
- Trump's accelerated vaccine program is dangerous
- you're a nazi if you don't want the vax
- you are not allowed to visit your dying grandmother because you could infect her with COVID, only nazis want to leave their house
- actually we all should be out demonstrating now, thousands of people in the streets
- fiery but peaceful protests, who cares about destruction, it's just objects and they have insurance, a few murders are not that bad because the majority of protesters did not murder anyone
- Jan6 was literally worse than the holocaust and 9/11 combined

How do normies take it without breaking?

We're never going to stop suffering over a concrete baboon nigger degenerate overdosing, are we? Let's hope someone defecates on any future monument with his name attached.

Even if his body eventually disintegrates into the earth, the memory and legacy of George Floyd will never be forgotten...

The chimpout sucked, but it did lead to the CHAZ/CHOP Street takeover - which was the funniest thing to come out from that shitstorm. Lefties and joggers took over a street, advertised it as an anti-government commune, and in the space of a few days had their own soundcloud nigger warlord handing out rifles, retards trying to grow vegetables on cardboard (said veggies then destroyed by an insane cracked-up troon), people OD'ing or being attacked and not allowing paramedics to help, and immediatly running out of food and harrasing the people who lived on the street to feed them.

And best of all - when a duo of joyriding teen joggers crashed into the side of their barricade, the CHAZ security force promptly walked up and executed the driver. A commune built in protest of the cruel execution of a black person, executed a black person. Case is still not solved btw.

Oh, also the mayor had absolutely no problem with the takeover. Even calling it a 'street party' and a 'summer of joy'. Right up until the rioters started getting too close to her mansion, in which case suddenly CHOP got destroyed in one night. Fun times. Glad I was around to experience the shitshow.
