With a (questionable) W from James Drake, how would you rate season 5 of Fishtank?

  • 1 Star — Absolute disaster. Unwatchable, boring, production fucked it up bad, the fish were lame

S4 was shit for different reasons than "the cast sucked".
Ellie was very entertaining until the competition actually began, the camera stare in the interview with Sam was easily the the most weirded-out I've been while watching Fishtank, felt like something crazy was brewing behind the scenes. I already explained how direnc was good. Freddy was freddy. Aryeh is not a real person, I still refuse to believe it. Daniel was quickly becoming the most hateable contestant ever. Same for Angelina. Rachel was a perfect obese lunatic. Jin was basically asking to be tortured. They all each embodied a different kind of annoying fan while still being fairly entertaining to watch. It was a perfect storm.
Not to mention Sam was acting completely unhinged, which seemed like a character decision and not purely just Sam losing steam. (in the promo for the season he was playing the same fucked-up version of Goldstriker, it was a core focus of the promo)

...Then it completely fizzled. Even before getting kicked out of the house.

If S4's bizarre build-up actually led to some kind of insane hellhouse conclusion, the season would have been great. Basically another season 3 rugpull, but on insufferable clout-chasing fan contestants (with Freddy and Direnc as outliers), and even on the people watching. Kino, high art, The Wire, etc.

I think Freddy would be perfect as a freeloader more so than a contestant, he just fits the description perfectly, he's a loud crashout leech who gets on everyone's nerves. This might be controversial but I don't necessarily think that the contestants should be the loudest personalities in the house, I mainly want them to be kinda hapless, fun victims. But the real freaks should be the freeloaders. Either way there should be something different or off about them as compared to the main cast, that's a detail I think they lost after season 1.

contestants can be freaks, but freeloaders MUST be freaks. Nothing is worse than a dud of a freeloader, but contestants can be the duds the turn into hapless victims because they're stuck in it to win it (or they ragequit, but ideally their crashouts are legendary)

But you can have a contestant be a loud freak (Alex B, Burt, Jimmy) but freeloaders can't be duds (though Ollie was an example of a freeloader who was a hapless victim, same with Greg now that I think about it)

part of me wonders if the intent as to rush into the intense stuff to make contestants suffer more, but then Rachel was forced to quit because she's literally 2fat2function and things started to fall apart. I'd have to rewatch the entire s4 streams, but I wonder if Rachel quitting was the beginning of the end of production's energy, like after that they didn't know what to do.
 
The Wire is a show that ran five seasons on HBO from 2002 to 2008. The show depicted drug dealers and the police detectives working against them in Baltimore. The show's name refers to the use of wiretaps on the drug dealers' telecommunications by the police.

There are 2 types of freeloaders: normal people and freaks/trolls. Both are necessary.

The house wouldn't be fun if it was 10 Alex B and Franks screaming at the 4 remaining contestants and throwing shit at the wall. Normal freeloaders act as surrogate fish, allowing for actual relationships to form between them and the fish and for them to be trolled.

Taylor was very boring, but she allowd for the TJ Love arc and for Jimmy seethe. Jeff and Connor basically existed to be humiliated by Frank and the audience. Vimp, despite being complete nontent, allowed for Lanon simp trolling content. The only problem with these freeloaders is that they often overstay their welcome, while the freaks burn out quickly. Freeloader eliminations should be an option for this.

There is a 3rd type: the ex-fish. This type believes it knows what the audience wants and overdoes it. They become a mix of both in that they are boring yet push everything too far. Jon did this season 1 and Landon took the cake with this in season 5; going from fan favorite to one of cringiest fish to ever have been on the show.

i honestly like these freeloaders, they are basically video game NPCs that make the house seem more alive, they are a valuable part of the show and a good way for things to not get too grim

Well, stealing Rachel's Xanax would be one thing. Freddy was hilarious, but he's not someone you want around. He steals, he's violent, he's a drug addict. He also tried dosing people with laxatives, which is hilarious, but technically that's poisoning someone.
