Depends on someone's perspective, if someone thinks they have more value as a writer/musician/whatever, then ofc they would prioritize that, jon knows he's not all there, so he focuses on his physic.
 
Vance should absolutely work on self improvement. Specifically his hair loss and shit posture. Every time I see him, he's stooped over and looking down. He has a small hump on his back forming.

You can exercise and work on creative endeavors. I also think that Jon didn't mean to just self-improve physically alone, Vance just coped by assuming that Jon meant just physically.
