There's really not much to be said beyond "Edelgard let's the anti-theists on reddit jerk themselves off". These are fundamentally uncomplicated people. The fact that someone completes the genocide of a race of people comes secondary to [no more religion = good].
The final scene in Azure Moon is someone overanalyzing the shit that Edelgard is allegedly dealing with and is conveniently ignoring the fact that an sizeable portion of the Imperial Army has been killed off, the enemy is literally invading the White House, and the war has been lost in the conventional sense.
The two below these are somewhat accurate, but the game never really shines an light on what would happen if any of the Eagles decides to opt out of her jihad (aside from Hubert doing Hubert things).
The post-timeskip routes show why the Fire Emblem team should stop trying to be cute and doing multiple routes. It doesn't tend to work out for them - hell, the closest we have to it somewhat working is Gaiden/Valentia, and that's doing it's own fuckery with Alm/Celica.
Yeah, that one could be written off as an quirk of it being written very early in the series and the writing team was kind of inexperienced.

I played black eagles first, and always found the church people to be suspicious and obviously lying and letting months go by without even trying to explain the weird shit they were up to. So I sided with Edelgard. I didn't even think she was a villain, and had no idea the route split in chapter 10 until I looked it up. The idea of siding with the church just seemed ludicrous given how obviously evil they were. I played the other two main routes, they sucked, and all the characters sucked, and the maps didn't have enough variety, and it was piss easy on normal and hard and actually annoying on maddening since you have to turtle up at choke points to efficiently deal with enemies. They should have finished up the Edelgard route where you kill the ayys or whatever the fuck they were. Instead, you kill Rhea cause she was full of shit about being a dragon, and your super saiyan thing or whatever went away. And then the game just sort of ends.
I’m not sure if I call them the exception, or just assume that everyone involved in writing and localizing them has left over the years and now we have talentless hacks in the writing room.

I haven't played Radiant Dawn yet but there's nothing wrong with the two routes in Sacred Stones. You get a couple of different levels and a few different story events that don't change anything major in the story. They reconnect back into one pretty quickly if I remember right.
I kind of wish they would've made Egelgard a guy instead of a chick so that people would look at her story more objectively. I think you're right by saying people only defend her because they think she's hot.
And the other side is kinda gay too but has more poorly narrativized canon on its side.
Not sure if that’s the case at all. People tend to better tolerate grim subject matter from guy characters all the time and the fandom already treats a girl (Dorothea) far worse than a guy (Sylvain) for… not even the same behavior but for touching on similar subjects.
I'm inclined to think it's the case considering, after doing some digging, these people also happen to be massive yurifags. And I don't mean the DLC femboy house leader in Three Houses.

With Radiant Dawn are you refering to the split armies? The game shifts its focus a lot which can annoy players if they for example want to play as the Greil Mercs rather than the Dawn Brigade but the game itself is just one route that always plays out in the same order

Perhaps. I would expect Golden Deer to be more coomerific though. Lysithea, Hilda, and Marianne must have more tags than Edelgard, Dorothea, Bernadetta, and even Petra thrown in for an additional girl.

Well, it certainly doesn't help that both of the games tries to sell themselves as an incredibly deep story when 3 Copes kept repeating the "my partner in destiny" crap and the current lord's writing. And Houses is just the cast commenting on the ethics of medieval terrorism.

Early on in the thread, I described Arvis as an almost preemptive deconstruction of Edelgard, with his effort to create a better world by conquering the continent going to hell as the dark cult he allied with proceeded to usurp him while the conquered territories started resisting the rather harsh occupation. I stand by that point, and feel that people would make the connection and be less obsessed with Edelgard was a dude. You rarely see people say that Arvis was completely justified, especially in regard to the Belhalla Barbecue Party, while even Edelgard directly trying to kill her classmates seems to be considered justifiable for her fans.
