Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

Back when I played through coils I did briefly ponder that myself, but then when they revealed what the twins' dad looked like I went "Oh, duh. Both of them just married pale-skinned women."
Well that and also Louisoix is an old-ass man who's been on the road for most of his life. He's supposed to be pretty tanned.

new PLL came out, nothing much new other than more glamour plates, more dresser slots, and quality of life updates, next patch comes in mid-april
Looking forward to Ultima's Bane (Unreal). I don't like many of the ARR extremes (especially hyper gimmicky ones like Thornmarch and Whorleater) so I skipped the mode, but Ultima's Bane will be cool.

Out of curiosity, at what point in a given fight's design does its mechanics distinguish itself as being gimmicky or not?

Any fight with an extra action button, objects to interact or vehicles would be in the gimmicky area.
As a general rule, yeah, and there's a lot of fights in the game with those mechanics.

But I'm asking @Fcret where he considers it a line drawn. Because Thornmarch doesn't have extra action buttons or interactable objects, but, mechanically speaking, it does require kill orders and split-tanking.

Whorleater with its interactables and the boss reflecting specific types of damage is where the fight gets into gimmicky territory.

Thornmarch also doesn't feel great because it's an add-based fight without an aggro table so it's more like five different fights happening at the same time. It's audio-visual mush.

I don't have hard and fast rules for most of this. If I get a fight in Wondrous Tails and roll my eyes at the thought of having to do it unsynced, then it's probably not a fight I'm going to seriously want to do for Unreal.

I’ve been taking a break from the game to play Elden Ring and I also haven’t been talking to a lot of people or reading things in the ffxiv discords or Reddit or in game chat and for some odd reason I felt different. Almost as if I had somehow regained perspective or like I wasn’t feeling a certain part of my mind rotting. Meanwhile before I was logging in everyday and playing for a few hours and bombarded with Crystal’s community chat not just in game, but on discord as well.

Has the community always been so out to lunch and completely looney tunes that feeling unhinged felt like the status quo? Or am I just cynical and I just don’t get along with people in that game? Or both?

FFXIV's community feels like absolute shit to play the game with on average because these people don't value anyone's enjoyment but their own, these people practically enjoy wasting your time because "you don't pay my sub" tier arguments. It is just exhausting, I should want to enjoy playing with people in an MMO but I hate how coddled this community is and I wish Yoshi-P would just slap these retards. even though he never will for obvious reasons and while I understand his perspective I hate dealing with these people.

This is ignoring the political shit, tranny shit, furry shit, e-thot rp shit, parse lord shit, content creator shit, and everything else we've discussed in this thread at some point or another. The very foundation of just playing the game is obnoxious because if you've been here long enough and you aren't just some uber positive shitter, I think you'll just feel like everyone is just wasting your time because they can't be fucked to press more than 5 buttons and they enjoy having that "freedom".

Can we just be rejoined now? I take back everything I said, the Ascians did nothing wrong.

I've been taking a break too but personally I never had any issues with the community to begin with cause I just block or mute anyone on social media who's annoying and don't socialize ingame.

If you're going to interact with the social media part of the community, you have to be able to not internalize tumblr mind poison. That goes for any fandom really, but FFXIV is particularly severe in this aspect because it's been running for so long and the game actually supports people projecting themselves and their social circles into the world itself.

I basically don't read FFXIV twitter anymore because 90% of it is just people getting mad at other people for having 'incorrect' opinions about certain characters.

FFXIV twitter is hilarious because when its not just sexual degeneracy its 18 to 40 somethings being so attatched to a random MMO that they spend god knows how much money into the game itself but also on shit like OC comissions

Doubly more when shit like Static drama rarely peeks its head out and its a bunch of supposedly "uwu and wholesummm" retards spewing the worst venom at each other because they mistimed a buff potion and dealt 2% less damage in a burst window, or didnt want to raid at asinine NEET-tier schdules

I also just remember that drama piece from that chick from the balance and realize its very funny how in spite of how a big part of the XIV community is kinda pozzed, the extremely hyper online will still find a way to have a tantrum and call it sexist

Weirdly enough, I find that people who aren't NEETs want to raid at these ass-backwards times. I was the only one unemployed in my old static during the pandemic and I still didn't want to raid 9 PM to midnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Only wagies with kids can dream of such fucked up sleep schedules. No mere NEET can compete.

yee i was thinking of the niggas who expect you to raid either on the 5pm ish timeslots (for many wagies in the US, barely enough time to get home from wagecucking if traffic is autistic), or early morning weekdays, granted i havent been part of a group with schedules since i got a job, so im just talking about what ive seen than what ive experienced

"Yoshida-san, the players are getting restless. The MSQ and Asphodelos alone aren't enough to keep them subbed during a 4-month patch cycle..."

"Hmm... deploy the Moogle Event..."

"Ryoukai!"

People talk about being filtered by ARR. Why? Based on my experience I would guess the storyline, because I personally found it pretty uninteresting and repetitive. I'm hoping it gets better in the other expansions.

Yeah, the story is extremely confusing and the pace rushes by. It does a pretty poor job of exploring themes that become prominent in latter content, particularly the relationships between the various nations and the personalities of the scions themselves. But beyond that, the gameplay is also extremely slow and boring - most of the jobs have very little to do at 50, much less before it. A lot of capstone abilities and traits come in the 50-70 stretch, before which you rarely have anything to manage or think about.

It is about 30-40 hours of almost brainless combat if you've ever played an MMO in your life, a story that doesn't feel like its going anywhere for most of those hours, and the classes/jobs are really badly put together at those levels due to skill pruning to add newer skills at higher levels without overly excessive button bloat. If you can get into the sort of DnD early levels tier story for the first 20-40 levels its okay at best, but ARR basically does mostly set up and only has two major pay offs after a couple dozen hours of ehhhhh stuff going on. I think it works well enough in retrospect, but it takes far too much time to get there for the average person unless you're a no life who can just smash through ARR in a week.

I'd say generally speaking, yes the other expansions are better (Stormblood is hit or miss, but the combat is at least much better). Although I'd say if you aren't at least remotely interested or into the writing by the end of Heavensward, I'd cut your losses. While I think Shadowbringers is the best narrative and the jobs are most fun by that point, it is a very long stretch of time to get there and Stormblood has some sloggy moments akin to ARR and really "questionable" to put it lightly narrative choices that make some of the build up in ARR feel wasted.

tl;dr: Bad early combat, faceroll content, eh story, takes too long to go anywhere. You might enjoy yourself in the end but it'll cost you dozens of hours worth of time that realistically most people won't put up with and likely find something as satisfying in another game.

it's not even the combat, it's the utter feeling of not progressing at all because everything's tied to the MSQ. the quests being post-arr launch filler content doesn't help either.
I think the combat is extremely bad because it is literal 1 > 2 spam for the first 15 hours, then it is 1 > 2 > 3 spam, then after maybe 15 more hours you get a few off gcd weaves and an actual mechanic maybe. Considering people like to pitch FFXIV as having good gameplay, dealing with this for the next 60+ something hours probably makes that claim feel like a lie alongside the actual combat being a joke due to bad number scaling making easy fights even easier. So you are reading a questionable writing quality novel that feels like it goes nowhere, then you do a joke boss fight that dies in 2 minutes, then you go back to reading until you fight 3 dudes who die in 5 seconds then back to the novel.

Oh and also the Castrum/Praetorium...exist. I can't wait to see them fix those shitboxes of dated design.

I remember that as a sprout I did think it was cool to see other player characters in my prae cutscenes cause it emphasised the fact that your WoL did just go around and recruit other absolute madmen to go liberate a country. Of course that's only cool the first time.
