Like how pain releases endorphins and some people have more endorphins released than normal when experiencing pain. This leads to masochism.
Sadism is a trickier one to tackle. That one I think is more a person wants total control over another human being, which can be achieved through "punishment". When a sadist and a masochist meet up, everybody wins
