Science Fecal transplants led to long-term reduction in autism symptoms, study reports - The cure to autism: poop transplants


TEMPE, Az. — A study by Arizona State University researchers said that a clinical trial done on 18 children with autism that involved transforming their gut microbiomes through fecal transplants led to a significant reduction in symptoms.

"Professional evaluation revealed a 45% decrease in ASD symptoms compared to baseline," stated a press release from the ASU Biodesign Institute. "Researchers note that although there may be some placebo effect, much of that effect appears to be real. At the start of the study, 83% of participants were rated as “severe” autism. At the end of the study, only 17% were “severe,” 39% were “mild/moderate,” and 44% were below the cut-off for mild ASD."

The study, published April 9, followed up with the participants two years after the transplants and found a reduction in core autism spectrum disorder symptoms like language, social interaction and behavior.

Doctors have known of a connection between ASD and gastrointestinal disorders for years, but this study was based off of a newer theory that your gut microbiome can affect the brain, due to interplay between the GI tract and the central nervous system.


"An earlier study with only vancomycin (an antibiotic) had found major temporary improvements in GI and autism symptoms, but the benefits were lost a few weeks after treatment stopped despite use of over-the-counter probiotics," ASU said.

As funny as 'poop transplants' sound, I thought it would be interesting to supplement this article with this for a better understanding of fecal transplants.

There's two types of autism--with intellectual disability and without. The kind without can learn to become more normal, but the kind with will always be exceptional even if they don't have extreme behaviors, and there's nothing that can be done about that.
True, but those without still have to deal with the symptoms, mainly being unable to understand social norms unconsciously like normal people, and having to put up with the assault on the senses that modern life brings.

It would be interesting to take multiple blood tests to measure stress hormones in someone with mild, without intellectual impairment autists, then periodically take measurements while receiving these fecal transplants. If the transplants are fixing the symptoms of autism and are not simply providing a bonus to coping mechanisms, then logically the levels of stress hormones these individuals would have in highly stressful (to them) situations would be dramatically decreasing.

That would be incredibly difficult to measure accurately, but if it was possible and it did show a remarked improvement, then this would be a legitimate "autism treatment" as opposed to merely masking the symptoms and enhancing coping methods. if true, that would be huge news, especially as it is looking more and more like the gut microbe has an incredible effect on our mental state.

So you're saying that autism's symptoms aren't entirely genetic? You better keep this under wraps before the anti-vaxxers find out.
 
Wait, so the guy who was injecting autistic kids with bleach enemas was on to something?
No, if anything he was doing the exact opposite of what this would do. Instead of donating new fecal bacteria to help balance things out or just outright introduce missing kinds, a bleach enema would absolutely destroy the unbalanced fecal bacteria in somebody's gut. From my basic medical knowledge the comparison is like a vaccine teaching white blood cells how to balance itself to fight something, VS. Aids which would just cause them to kill themselves.

It's entirely possible that if this is true, his bleach enemas might have made people more autistic than when they had their asshole intact.

Not about "poop" transplants, but related to the microflora/ fauna that the children are not inoculated with at birth. Many kids born via Cesarean section were found to have higher rates of Autism. Which may or may not be causally linked to the presence or lack thereof of specific bacteria that are present in the vaginal canal. The "poop" is the location for the anaerobic bacteria which give off their own 'shit' which apparently crosses the blood brain barrier affecting behavior.
 
I applaud this man and his lifetime achievement of getting autistic kids to swap poops and put them in their butts.
And they called it science.
Next up, seeing if you really can talk autistics out of their clothes by telling them ghost stories.

Amino acid related genetic malfunctions are becoming more understood lately and by the sounds of things, that may be where autism research is heading.
The Hartley Hooligans's ASD is an extreme form, but they're making some advances in glutamate synthesis disorders, I think it was, I can't remember now, but it was talked about in the thread. Itd be interesting if the cysteine etc connection proves solid.
