Unrelated politisperging, but I find it funny that every German chancellor during the Cold War barring Kiesenger and Kohl who were ousted by elections was forced to resign/was ousted from power for one reason or another; Adenauer was forced to resign because he was too old, Erhard was forced to resign because of his coalition falling apart due to a poor economy, Brandt was forced to resign because of the Guillaume Affair, and Schmidt was ousted through a vote of no confidence (The only time in German history that this happened, I believe) because of a recession.

Generally a politician who can serve for life will choose to serve for life when possible. Merkel stopped running because she saw that CDU was imploding and she was unpopular. Germans seem to generally enjoy long lasting figureheads, the average Chancellor seems to have 10+ years. The recent upset is unusual.
