I'm gonna put in a positive word for James Cameron. I admire his go big or go home attitude. The whole, if we're going to make a film about Titanic, first we need to build the god damn Titanic philosophy is something I admire. I know Avatar was a CG fest and draws criticism for that, but if you look at the amount of R&D the guy did to make Pandora a convincing place, it's impressive.
 
Want to say John Carpenter, while I haven't liked every movie he has made, the ones I like I can really watch when I'm in any mood which I can't say about the works of other directors even if I overall enjoy their output more.
