Fatal butt injection leads to 5-year involuntary manslaughter sentence
The victim, a dancer at Pink Slip nightclub, died when the silicon travelled into her lungs
A Dallas woman who administered a lethal injection into the rear-end of a 22-year-old nightclub dancer will spend five years in prison, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Nitica Deonte Lee, 49, pleaded guilty to giving Daysha Phillips a 2015 silicon buttocks enhancement shot that killed the victim after the chemical element traveled through her blood and into her lungs, prosecutors charged.
“Liquid silicone injected into individuals’ bodies can cause serious harm and even death, as this tragic case shows,” Special Agent in Charge Charles L. Grinstead, head of the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations’ Kansas City Field Office, said in a statement announcing the sentence. “The FDA has not approved any liquid silicone product for body enhancements.”
Cosmetic surgeons use fat from elsewhere in the body for enhancements, but black market practitioners sometimes use silicone sourced from hardware stores. Deaths have occurred around the country.
Phillips and three other women met up with Lee at an airport hotel near St. Louis, where the botched procedure reportedly took place. Phillips soon after experienced trouble breathing and was taken to a hospital. She died four days later.
Two of the other women received the same shot from Lee, according to investigators, who said that pair suffered no side effects. A fourth woman backed out of getting the injection.
Lee was charged with involuntary manslaughter nearly six years ago, but went on the run. She spent some time in Mexico, prosecutors charged, but was apprehended in Dallas in July.
Phillips danced at a Brooklyn, Ill., nightclub called Pink Slip using the stage name Milani Mulan.
Lee spent four years in prison on charges of robbery, burglary and theft before being released in 2011, the Post-Dispatch reports. KMOV reports that she is not a medical professional.
