Yeah, one of our friends recently floated a pretty sensible idea: the lego movie may be what kicked off his current obsession with legos. It seems like legos are actually the new PS3.

For some reason cultural phenomenons get Chris' attention, and for the next couple years after it dominates his life. Sonic the Hedgehog was one of these, followed by Pokemon later on. Movies are clear indicators to Chris that something's a big deal. Any time a toy gets a movie, Chris strongly considers making that his newest obsession. He saw all the Pokemon movies and even that YuGiOh movie. Lego is the new big thing, and that makes Chris feel hip and current even though he has always played with them. I guess when your life is meaningless playtime all the time, going to a movie about toys is the greatest day of the year.

This is what I figured. He also seems to be back on the Nintendo bandwagon when it comes to gaming. But yeah gaming in general seems to be 2nd place to Lego at the moment.

I've been saying since he posted that it was now his second favorite film ever that he obviously really, really, liked that Lego movie. Having not seen it myself, and not going to see it, I can't say what exactly struck so strong a chord in him from it, but I can guess; the plot that an average schmoe answers the hero's journey call and saves the world from evil, it's an allegory for your average tomgirl answering the lovequest call and saving his heartsweet from the ground up from the clucthes of some jerk, a very six in one, half a dozen in another type of tale that even an ignoramus like Chris can wholesale juxtapose over his own existence and draw parallels from or inspiration out of.

Hilariously, the central theme of The Lego Movie is to be creative: don't just follow the instructions, strive to make amazing creations out of your own imagination.

CHRIS FAILS HORRIBLY AT THIS. For Chris to adore this movie as much he does is laughable, because the premise is anti-Chris at its core.

I'd argue to you that, 'That's so CHANDLER,' for that theme to fly completely undetected past Chris yet have the movie land squarely onto the second spot of his list of the five greatest movies ever without him having that crushing irony dawn on him. The fact that's what little children are being led to draw from this film and Chris is just obliviously carrying on without coming to that realization though is so  inspiring to me however COGB!

Thanks for cluing me into that particular little irony and saving me 90 minutes of my life in the process. I'm considering a conversion to the denomination you proselytize for in a show of appreciation.

Mainstream console gaming is moving away from Chris' taste profile. There aren't enough colorful mascot games for him on the PS4.

Seriously, it's on a par with him somehow thinking Family Guy is an anti-gay sitcom. It's impossible for him to be more wrong about it.

Chris WAS eager to upgrade his PS1 to a PS2, and then his PS2 to a PS3. He loved his PSP. Didn't he even buy a Vita, even though it wasn't very impressive on the software front?

Maybe Chris isn't in love with Sony, but his track record shows him owning every major Sony console. For someone with Chris's brand fixation, it's a notable pattern.
Compared to nintendo or sega?

^Chris is always 100% dedicated to his brand of choice... until he isn't. The example that always comes to mind for me is alcohol. Drinking was BAD NEWS in the worst way thanks to Chris deepthroating whatever Dare wanted to shove at him in the 90's, but once he tried a long island tea, all of a sudden drinking was totally fine. Smoking is still no good, though.

From what we can gleam about Chris in the 90s, he wasn't a fan of Sega as much as he was of Sonic in particular. And although he was obviously familiar with Zelda and Mario, he didn't sperg over them. Id actually say Chris's affinity for Nintendo is mixed... He had a crazy fixation on his DS, but has never mentioned his wii other than to confirm he had one.

The Playstation is the only console to be called a "life upgrade" though.

No but don't you see, in Chris' mind he is the most creative and ingenious person that has ever set foot on Earth. Of course he thought the premise spoke to him. That is, if he understood it at all, and if he's not just buying lego because he expects that if he collects enough of them suddenly "everything will be awesome!" (It won't if he doesn't have somewhere to keep them, like oh, a house.)

I think that a big part of the PS3's status as a life upgrade was the PSEye. It was his portal to the internet when he was optimistic and naive, and he used it to broadcast the Christian Show live from his bedroom. He conducted online romances with it too, all in piss stained yellow. Without the PSEye we all would have a lot less documented crazy, so it was a life upgrade for us all.

Ah, but again, the "life upgrade" is his PS3, not every playstation console he had. (If I'm remembering correctly)

And the psquad doesn't extend his life upgrade.

Heh, maybe. But I think smoking might be a bit too harsh for little Chrissy's lungs. Oh man, though if he got a vaporizer, he'd be a complete addict.

Just reading this conversation makes me believe that Chris's number one Life Upgrade is now Lego. Shiny, always backwards compatible, and something he can needlessly dump our hard earned American dollar into.

I really think he should invest his tugboat into vaporizer, but seeing him smoke that would kind of disgust me. He would never clean it out.

As an aside, when Chris is sitting on his ass asking for the moon and the stars, he never ONCE mentions a PS4.

Is he simply off Sony now? If so, what brought this on?
By all accounts Chris' PS3 game playing has dropped off significantly in recent months. He doesn't even play on it more than once or twice a month if I read his PSN profile correctly.

I suspect it's because of his new living conditions at the rental. He obviously recovered his PS3 from the fire to some degree of functionality, but televisions are a little more difficult to restore from smoke and especially water damage. Even though the rental house came furnished, I would be surprised if a rental house that size came with more than one television. Since Chris' schedule is defined by Barb, and Barb doubtless monopolizes that one television, Chris has precious little time to play PS3 vidya between Barb's stories, driving Barb to yell at State Farm, q-sand runs, and mandatory spooning sessions. This is probably the main reason he seems to be sticking mainly to mobile devices. Even Chris might recognize the futility of spending $400 on a new console he won't be able to play. There's also the possibility he knows he won't be able to sneak in a new console and connect it to their one television without Barb knowing and complaining about such a large purchase. The hoard hasn't recovered enough yet for him to slip it in as just another black plastic box. Since one lego set looks pretty much the same as any other lego set, it's easier for him to sneak in legos under Barb's radar, especially if he can claim: "the trolls bought it for me."

Or one of those cannabis oil mini-vape e-cigarettes that all the cool kids are smoking these days. I can totally see Chris going for that in a big way after trying it because "it's not really smoking" and "it's not really marijuana" and "it's natural medicine for all the stress".

I was almost hesitant to make this reply because now that we've mentioned it here, how long before a ween mails him one in a care package? It would be a particularly nasty way to fuck with Chris in the long term, assuming they can get him to try it. Hell, even nicotine e-cigs would be bad enough for the dent they would put in his :tugboat: (and, you know, the risk of cancer).

So in the end, Chris transforms into not :sonichu: but *yawn*.

He wouldn't know how to even smoke a regular bowl, let alone a hash pen.

So at the end of the Lego Movie, its revealed that everything that has been going on is actually happening in Will Ferrell's character's massive basement collection, almost like a Toy Story-the-toys-are-alive type thing. He's got massive skyscrapers and sprawling space ship fight scenes, and as you can probably guess its basically a huge toy commercial. It's obvious this guy takes his Lego collecting very seriously and seemingly has every set. I think this had a major impact on OPL.

I'm a fan of Lego myself. Even 30+ years of off and on buying, I don't think I have $5000 worth.
And to think I felt like a dick for publicly posting about a $900 USED workstation that I wanted so I could get back up to speed with graphic arts and animation and better myself with a computer that could get out of its own way.

What this thread displays most starkly for me is how few of you have any feeling for what mental illness is and how it effects people. . The combination of his mental illness (not getting into it's nature here, that's very debatable) and atrocious parenting have him locked into patterns of behaviour that he's not equipped in any way to break out of. Chris is no more able to act differently than the wheelchair bound are able to compete in the 100m Olympic finals.

He can't, for example, just go and get a job. No-one would employ him, he's not able to want one, he wouldn't be competent enough to do one, couldn't handle fellow employees or bosses, let alone members of the public and would be a volatile and also vulnerable employee. The only way he could enter the jobs market is within a highly structured programme of employment for special needs cases which would inevitably cost more than his input would be worth.

So Chris' only way of getting anything he's ever wanted is to ask for it in a straightforward unsubtle way. He's unequipped to understand that begging from those with a roof and food and some income is seen by society as reprehensible. He has no idea that asking for toys and fast food over the basics is beyond the pale and if you told him he'd be unable to understand it. The biggest surprise to me is that those who you who have followed and read about Christory don't see all this more clearly.

I imagine you'll call me a white-knight for the above. I'm not, I don't want to help Chris or send him anything. I suppose it's just that I find his followers thoughts and reactions just as interesting as his own.

Personally I'm a moral vacuum who likes laughing at the mentally crippled.

Strong username to post content ratio, brother

So let me see if I understand this, you accuse us of having little compassion for the mentally challenged but you have no problem laughing at said people?

Also, autism.

I would say that although he may no longer be optimistic, he's still naive (if just not quite as much as before).

I guess my thinking would be, if the PS3 was the life upgrade from the PS2 era, then logically the PS4 would be the life upgrade from the PS3 era.

Man, Kim is like the only sane person on Chris' facebook. While Anna cheers him on as he vandalizes private property ("You should take your mother with you to Walmart to get unbanned." : B ) and Kenneth and Waterhead are busing acting like exeptional individuals, Kim actually calls Chris out on stuff. A true pal that is prepared to be a bit harsh (As good friends should) with him.
