Exactly, ALL food is cheap as fuck in the states... most "poor" people can afford to eat healthy or atleast lower calorie with some minimal prep and planning. And eve if they couldn't, why not just eat less? It's cheaper afterall.

The truth is people are fat because they're lazy, not because they're poor. Sure... There's lots of lazy poor people in the states so they tend to be correlative when you look at statistics, but that doesn't mean it's causation.

When I was talking about poor people and healthy food, it was strictly in the context of why kentucky has such a large population of obeasts. These are people who believe buttered biscuits with bacon and chocolate gravy are a reasonable breakfast. These are people who have been poor for generations and saved their bacon grease to spread on their toast. Their diets and tastes have been fucked for generations and if there's no healthy helping of lard, they don't want it.

I also talked about how in previous generations, their culture of heavy manual labor (both for men, and women running the home w/o gadgets) balanced out the high calories and fat content - it was necessary for them. But in 2019, eating meemaw's lard casserole with pappap's favorite bacon grease corn and bacon on the side, for a comforting dinner, or some variation of it, a most nights a week, probably isn't a good diet. It's cheap, for sure, but there are other cheap things too. But they haven't been introduced into the standard backwoods kentucky diet, they're just fine with what they have, thank you very much.

It's no different in any other culture, if you've been raised on kosher deli food, or italian american food, or latin american food, adding other things into the diet isn't going to be appealing. It's just that none of those foods mentioned are so culturally tied to larded everything.
