I guess since they're the type of dummies that fall for the Alt-Right and white supremacists "claiming" things like drinking milk, making the OK hand sign, or that gif of that headbanging pigeon, it's not really a surprise that they would desperately try and snatch up the things they like reflexively, as if anybody but them will acknowledge it.

It's just an odd one as he starts to grow a bit of facial hair in the show. A MTF wouldn't keep the facial hair and an FTM wouldn't be able to grow facial hair without hormones which wouldn't be readily available in post-apocalypse. It's just not a thing.
