People still boot up Deus Ex because the game let you go hog wild.

The core gameplay in yansim is pretty simple, kill your rival. It should have been two years TOPS to implement some pathfinding and triggers to create an open world school environment.

I think maybe 20 trigger events by "special" NPCs would have made a complete game. Most students just need basic pathfinding, leaving only special cases like Raibaru, the journo and various teachers.

With the prefab asset library he's got, I legitimately think a real dev could shit out a working beta in 5 days.

Swimming pool, rooftop, etc should have just been DLCs.

Why doesn't he just quit and leave it to someone else? (:_(
Stubbornness mostly. I'm also not sure who'd really pick up the pieces. We've seen other people attempt their own projects and the majority of them either fail outright or fizzle out. At best Alex has laid out a general premise, but I think his version of the game is too much of a mess to really do anything with. IIRC, that was basically what TinyBuild said when they were on board. Realistically, you'd need to build it from the ground up. Whoever inherits it would also have to deal with all the narrative problems head on instead of deflecting like Alex has done, so even from an idea standpoint, you'd want to start fresh.

He gets paid to pretend to develop his game. I don't know why people think he would give that up.
While I'm sure Alex enjoys the grift, I think for at least the last couple of years, he genuinely wants to move away from Yansim, but can't. His most recent "Pay me to make anything but Yansim on stream" is an example of that. He likes money and he's absolutely greedy, but I think he craves being a respectful game dev more. He's just too stubborn to admit Yansim is a failure and either needs to be ditched entirely or completely redone from the ground up.

At this point Alex needs a new source of income. He's currently getting roughly a third of what he used to get at the peak of his Patreon, and I'd bet the "collaboration" offers and "special donations for features" have completely disappeared at this point. As his fanbase skews young and has little money, they probably aren't buying much merchandise (the release of 1980s mode saw a poster and two sticker sheets added to the Crowdmade store; no new shirts or mugs). Any sort of Twitch career is clearly not happening as his Twitch viewcount is at its lowest and he's only actually streamed twice this month (according to TwitchTracker). He can't cut and run from Yansim as his fans would see that as betrayal (thus getting the only group of people that blindly praise him to turn on him), so he remains chained to Yansim and continues to try to tread water as it slowly pulls him under.

No shithole fastfood place wants to hire this turbo-autist

It's very bold of you to assume this has any sort of mainstream appeal anymore to the point where somebody would want pick up his work and make something decent out of it. My personal involvement ended when I realized each one of his "update" videos was just him bragging about fixing a single broken animation instead of the sweeping graphical and gameplay fixes needed to make a coherent product.

Kiwifarms Simulator, you have to make friends at school and then let them overshare enough for ammo to cyberbully them all to death.

I'm not convinced that he's worried about money. He'd start finding excuses to liquidate the remaining volunteer fund into his pockets if that was the case. Make something up about taking time from main dev to implement popular things that volunteers weren't addressing, and paying out for those "in good faith".

He's always been a creature of ego, and I think he's starting to realize that success, fame and acclaim are no longer possible for Yansim. He may think its because of mass character assassination of him and the game instead of his own incompetence, but how he arrived at it is irrelevant to realizing that he's not going to be the next Kojima as long as he's working on Yansim. Offramping to a new project is his only hope of trying to start fresh.

It won't work, the problem ain't the game but the dev, but when has rational consideration stopped him before.

I'm surprised people in this thread forgot he lives off his rich parents and so doesn't really need the money tbh.
I assume they pay for the house/utilities/essentials, but if Alex wants to whale on saltybet, gacha games or get a third Switch he's got to come up with the money himself.

He doesn't. He moved out in June of 2014. His mother checks on him from time to time, but that's it. The question remains if they give him money or not.

His whining is older than that. As early as on fifth anniversary he compared working on YS to being locked in a prison and it only got worse from there. It's understandable though, YS doesn't bring him as much money as it did, it will never get finished and attachment to it brings nothing but mockery for him. However, moving away is going to change only his status from obscure to completely unknown.

I learned about this from r/Osana but I had to share them here.

Calling bullshit on the “I won’t start the Kickstarter because people are mean to me :( “ excuse. I actually think that a YanSim Kickstarter would have a decent chance of succeeding as long as Alex doesn’t ask for some outrageous amount of money. The “game” has decent name recognition, and even after all the negative press, there’s still plenty of whales who’d be happy to fork over some cash if Alex threw them some bones (create a cellphone strap!!! design your own generic student!!!)

No, the real reason Alex doesn’t want to start the Kickstarter is because it’d mean he’d actually have a responsibility to finish the game on schedule. If the KS is successful, all of his normal excuses disappear:

- he can’t claim “volunteers haven’t made the assets yet” because he’s supposed to use the KS fund to pay for professionals
- he can’t claim “this is a tech demo not representative of the final game” because people are backing a game, not a tech demo
- he can’t use placeholder assets anymore, and the entire game will have to be rebuilt from the ground up
- most importantly, he can’t weasel out of wasting Kickstarter funds like he can with Patreon money. When you take people’s money on Kickstarter, you have an obligation to use it directly for game development within a timely manner. If people collectively donate tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars and get nothing in return, they’ll notice.

Alex definitely realizes all of this, which is why he’ll try to put off crowdfunding for as long as possible (if it ever happens at all).

Agree with this, but I also think he's scared of the negative scenario too - if the kickstarter didn't get funded or get even close to reaching its goal then it would be a brutal slap of reality by proving that the game's appeal really has died down. He probably has a lot of anxiety about this already, and this would confirm it.

So basically Kickstarter is a lose-lose scenario for him. He just wants to stay in the current comfort of being paid to do the bare minimum and keep up the facade.

We all know he didn't make that "new model" lmao, man can't draw for shit.
Whoever did it can't, either. The perspective is so screwed up the floors inside slope upwards a lot and the dome on top and the clock face are leaning forward. It's all wonky, and that's before you point out that even the superior Japanese mind can't create trees that are exact mirror images. And then there are the windows that shrink and compress together because the center ones are too big and they decided, "fuck it, can't be bothered to fix it" before mirroring everything.

It is in keeping with the rest of the concept art, at least, where everyone has scoliosis and a dislocated pelvis, at least. The building might as well warp reality, too.

It's all off-puttng, even if it's just subconsciously so, and people have thrown him a quarter million dollars for this.

The entire kickstarter fad has died down and he has built a negative reputation so I doubt a kickstarter would actually succeed. This is assuming he can deal with his ego, scrap the current project and actually let competent people work with him. The money would actually just be half the battle.

Not really. His whales can give him 100 bucks a month, but if he asks for something like 50k, I doubt they will have this much. Also, we've already talked about this - 50k is nothing in terms of gamedevelopment. Hell, even 100k could be barely enough to make something half-baked, but with Alex as the lead it won't be enough either.

Also, Kickstarter campaign would be an event big enough to bring all the negative press back into spotlight. I can see people donating one dollar just to write "consume the cum chalice", but still, I doubt that would be enough.

Don't forget that it's basically too late, he should have aimed to start a campaign somewhere in 2016-2018. Doesn't matter how much money he is going to ask, now anyone can point out "hey, didn't you get like X times of that amount in a span of 8 years with all the donations?"

This is particularly funny because if you labor through the current build of the game (202X Edition), at the end it upfront and loudly advertises a crowdfunding campaign. You can't return to the game at all until you run through the advertisement for it.

And now it's most likely never going to happen.
