I'd wager this was the inevitable consequence of Atheism+: when woke atheists were forced to deal with the fact that most minorities are religious if not actively subscribed to tribal superstitions, they let “reason and science” take a backseat so they wouldn't have to tell African tribals they are wrong.
The peak of it was really during the George W. Bush years so I'm pretty sure it's old enough to officially be uncool.
Definitely a super tiny niche nowadays. Kinda weird to see how much the overton window can shift around in less than a decade, especially among more left leaning people. Though, I scarcely remember people criticizing Islam or Judaism even back in the day. Maybe I missed it but IIRC it was like 90% of anti-christian sperging. The prime time of ultra edgelord Internet atheism was a blast though. Binging TAA, Shoe, Skeptic, Martymer and Dark Matter was like 90% of my YouTube consumption when I was an angsty teenager. Man that's a trip. Recently came across a random clip from the Drunken Peasants and hearing Ben's voice activated some really funky feels, the kind of sensation you'd get when passing by a place you used to play around in as a kid, or some smell or taste that just takes you way, way back. Doesn't quite feel the same nowadays, especially since Scotty and TJ aren't on the show anymore by the looks of it, but man, I still remember listening to Paul and the others talking about Ben Ghazi or some shit and not understanding half of what they're talking about but loving every second of it. Some of their memes like Kaiser Scotty or Ben's mask still feel fresh to me today. Phew, nostalgia's one hell of a drug.

even when I was a staunch atheist I was never this annoying if someone was religious I tried to be respectful literally atheists destroyed themselves with their own behaviour
The reason why people have a negative perception of atheism is because atheism's spokespeople are mostly a bunch of assholes. First there were the commies committing atrocities and sewing misery in the West, and then almost immediately after communism fell New Atheists made it their life's mission to be as much of a smug cunt as humanly possible.
I'd say that's already happening lol
