I maintain that his initial refusal to back down on Israel was him exercising real principles - he gained nothing from it and nearly lost everything - and when you've been that thoroughly ratfucked by your own political allies it becomes far easier to re-evaluate beliefs you thought were set in stone. It's almost like developing a subconscious bias against anything and everything the people who wronged you believe out of sheer spite.
