Erdogan/Turkish news megathread

Meet Recep Tayyip Erdogan, controversial president of Turkey. Erdogan has held a position of power in Turkey since 2002, though he was only elected President in 2014. Under Erdogan's government, Turkey has become more wealthy and more authoritarian, and Erdogan himself has come under fire several times, most recently in 2016.

In July of 2016, Erdogan was the target of a poorly organized military coup that seems to have had no effect besides increasing his popularity. In the wake of this coup, Erdogan has declared a state of emergency and continues to use the effects of the coup to get rid of political opponents and those who support his political opponents.

Two days ago, Turkish police arrested the cafeteria manager of a newspaper that opposes Erdogan, for insulting Erdogan and stating that he would refuse to serve Erdogan tea. Make of this what you will, but I think that this makes Erdogan one of the pettiest rulers in the history of the world.

If you call him Armenian and his terrifying wife a crypto-Jew, he goes apeshit. The funny thing is, he actually admitted to being of Georgian descent years ago and his wife is Arab.

If your country becoming more wealthy means selling it piece by piece to gulf states, beats me.

Erdogan is the biggest shitlord out of all the illiberal dictators out there. Putin has his charisma and Xi keeps it on the down low for the most part but Erdogan is just a lolcow with political power in a country with a lot of wasted potential. They could have been in the EU and called themselves de-facto Europeans but he threw that away, he could have been a good NATO partner and legit Muslim majority democratic country but he threw that away, could have been part of the Russia-Iran axis in the post US Mideast, could have fixed the issues with the Kurds, etc.

He is on course to get more executive powers. If all goes according to AKP planning, Turkish parliamentary system will soon be phased out in favor of an executive system more similar to US. When these changes come in to force, the office of president will be more powerful, and he will be able to stay in office for 10 more years, since term length is being extended to 5 yr and term limit being set at 2.

This whackjob is one of the people believed to be the most likely to start a world war simply because NATO will get drawn into thatever shit he starts.

The worst part is that he KNOWS NATO will back him up, so he does stupid, provocative shit constantly.

Not really. NATO is only going to help Turkey if it's attacked. If Turkey invaded another country and got its shit slapped, NATO would not give a fuck.
When Turkey downed a russian plane last year, NATO outright stated, it will not help Turkey if it proceeds on the route of fucking with Russia.

So, while I could see him overreaching and starting shit with some neighbor, it will certainly not be with NATO support.

Would be interesting if he tried to annex Cyprus, since that would be a casus foederi for the EU (and arguably for the NATO as well).

Erdogan approves constitutional boost to his powers

Turkey’s president has approved a bill granting him broad new powers under an executive presidential system, paving the way for a referendum in mid-April on the proposed changes.

The 18-article bill was passed by parliament last month without garnering the two-thirds majority needed to become law. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s approval allows the proposed constitutional changes to go to a public vote.

Senior Turkish officials have said the referendum is likely to take place on 16 April.

The constitutional overhaul would allow Erdoğan to run for two more terms in office, potentially governing as a powerful executive until 2029.

He's not even trying to pretend that he's not a dictator anymore.

This isn't big enough to warrant its own thread, but I think it's worth mentioning nonetheless:

Erdogan is preparing to pray in the Hagia Sophia on Good Friday
Istanbul (AsiaNews) - The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is preparing to go to pray next Friday April 14 in Saint Sophia in Constantinople, the church declared a museum by the father of Republican Turkey Kemal Ataturk in 1934.

Erdogan will not be alone: He will be accompanied by representatives of his party AKP (Muslim extraction) and religious leaders in Istanbul. According to the Christian calendar next Friday is Good Friday and the event will take place just two days before the April 16 referendum strongly backed by Erdogan in Turkey to establish an absolutist Presidency of Neottoman and Islamic extraction.

Thus Erdogan, nicknamed the "new sultan" for his political extremism, will seek to channel Muslim faithful in favor of a Yes ( "Evet") vote. According to the Muslim calendar the month to April (Nisan) is the month of the birth of Mohammed.

The news is carried in pro-government newspapers, presenting the latest book by Turk historian Mustafa Armagan - titled "The Saint Sophia intrigue" (Aya Sofia Entrikalari). In doing so they seek to create and prepare the climate for the prayer, as the will of the Turkish president. The book argues that the decree signed by Kemal Ataturk in 1934 which turned the Hagia Sophia from mosque into a museum, is not authentic. According to Armagan, the Kemal Ataturk signature on the decree is false. Therefore the act has no legal value and therefore Santa Sofia can in fact be used as a mosque, as was the case after the Turkish conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

Hagia Sophia it was built in 537 by Emperor Justinian and dedicated to God's Wisdom. To justify his remarks, the Turkish historian reports that the Kemal Aturk signature on the 1934 Decree is unlike any other signature penned by the Father of Republic in prori acts.

Various sources are cited in the book which claims, according to the author, that the transformation of Hagia Sophia into a museum, was the result of pressure from various Western international forces, headed by the then US Ambassador Joseph Grew.

Mustafa Armagan also notes the news that Kemal Ataturk had visited St. Sophia in 1935, three months after its proclamation as a museum, was not reported in any Turkish newspaper of the period, but only by the Greek language journal, Apogevmatini, published on February 7, 1935, in Istanbul. The author recalls, in that same period, the strong reaction of the Egyptian newspaper "El Risale ", strongly opposed to the transformation of Hagia Sophia into a museum.

In this way the pre-referendum climate is becoming increasingly tense and polarized. On the other hand, the climate has been fostered and created by Erdogan himself with his recent statements against the Kemalist period, when he proclaimed: "That period, which began in 1923, is about to end. And that's that". And that is, woe to the vanquished.
This seems like a gigantic middle finger to the Greeks, the Armenians, and Christians as a whole. The Hagia Sophia was one of Christendom's greatest churches for nearly a millennium until the Ottomans conquered Constantinople and turned it into a mosque. When the modern state of Turkey was founded, President Kemal Ataturk (smart man he was) decided to transform it into a secular museum, alleviating some of the religious tension the building attracted and preventing a potential sectarian conflict.

However, in recent years, Islamists (including some high-ranking governmental officials, such as the deputy prime minister Bülent Arınç) have been demanding that the Hagia Sophia be turned back into a mosque. It's not like there's a shortage of mosques in Turkey; it's just that the Hagia Sophia is a symbol of Islam's triumph over Christianity.

I mean, I'm not the only one who sees Erdogan's decision to pray there on Good Friday as a big "fuck you" to the Christian community, right?

He hates to be mocked in social media lol that justifies censorship in his mind. Just like they do in Spain.

Despite that, Erdogan has always been a deranged psychopath to me and I hope to be as far away from his country as possible.

Lol if that happens we're about to find out how hard it is to kick some country out of NATO and then nuke it.

The way I hear it, most Turkroaches outside of Turkey actually like the guy...

All these people have to inform themselves about the situation in Turkey is state propaganda and they certainly don't have the wherewithall to cross check it with western media they view as a mere mouthpiece of islamophobic/turkophobic fascists.

The infuriating thing about this whole ordeal is how these turks live in really open-minded, liberal and democratic nations, enjoying a save and comfortable existence - while supporting oppressive religious fascists at home.
