Science Elon Musk's Neuralink implants brain chip in first human - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had given the company clearance last year to conduct its first trial to test its implant on humans, a critical milestone in the startup's ambitions.

The first human patient has received an implant from brain-chip startup Neuralink on Sunday and is recovering well, the company's billionaire founder Elon Musk said.

"Initial results show promising neuron spike detection," Musk said in a post on the social media platform X on Monday.

Spikes are activity by neurons, which the National Institute of Health describes as cells that use electrical and chemical signals to send information around the brain and to the body.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had given the company clearance last year to conduct its first trial to test its implant on humans, a critical milestone in the startup's ambitions to help patients overcome paralysis and a host of neurological conditions.

In September, Neuralink said it received approval for recruitment for the human trial.

The study uses a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant in a region of the brain that controls the intention to move, Neuralink said previously, adding that its initial goal is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.

The implants' "ultra-fine" threads help transmit signals in participants' brains, Neuralink has said.

The first product from Neuralink would be called Telepathy, Musk said in a separate post on X.

The startup's PRIME Study is a trial for its wireless brain-computer interface to evaluate the safety of the implant and surgical robot.
Neuralink did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for further details.

The company has faced calls for scrutiny regarding its safety protocols. Reuters reported earlier this month that the company was fined for violating U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rules regarding the movement of hazardous materials.

The company was valued at about $5 billion last June, but four lawmakers in late November asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate whether Musk had misled investors about the safety of its technology after veterinary records showed problems with the implants on monkeys included paralysis, seizures and brain swelling.

Musk wrote in a social media post on Sept. 10 that "no monkey has died as a result of a Neuralink implant." He added that the company chose "terminal" monkeys to minimize risk to healthy ones.

Either way I don't feel great about putting things in my brain. Its already super sensitive to physical shock and even relatively low-grade trauma is bad news for brain health. For all its purported benefit, I can't forsee this being sustainable in the long term, such that I fear what happens when you get a faulty unit or improper surgical installation. The human body whilst relatively well understood, is none-the-less unpredictable. To me, the question is what benefit can this really endow to the average consumer. I just can't think of what advantage to a normal life this product/technology can realistically offer, that existing non-invasive alternatives don't already provide effectively. Voice commands seem pretty fine to me and controlling technology with your thoughts just seems fundamentally obsolete in light of already existing control schemes. Not to mention the potential for misuse and exploitative practices born of logging and collating the device data.

Its uncomfortable enough talking with someone about something, only to then recieve a targeted ad showing up immediately the next time you go online. Furthermore, one can't help but wonder if the developers are able to do things like remotely disable your chip, place limits on use, and employ tiers of useability behind escalating costs. I don't want to suddenly end up having to buy updates or subscribe to whatever service the chip relies on. When companies are not afraid of utilising planned obsolescence, how does that stack up for the individual when in order to remain up-to-date, that individual must face a potential series of surgeries, each with their own level of risk.

If it helps severely disabled and 'locked-in' people better achieve a higher quality of life, then I can atleast understand the desire to develop and instill this technology within that particular demographic of the population. That being said, as an individual with an average level of physical ability, the Neuralink Chip offers me nothing I wouldn't rather just do myself with my unmolested body. To me, there are just too many risks, and too many unknown unknows. Not to mention you can bet that its full capabilities will not be revealed until its too late, and we find out the hard way.

does that mean that the company will also choose "terminal" humans to minimize the risk to healthy ones?

if so, then i would suggest choosing the zoosadists, the rapists, and those who abuse children and the elderly.

oh, and don't worry about minimizing the risk.

Again, most of the fearmongering assumes the implant can edit your brainwaves in any way.

The pictures itself shows that the actual processing unit is a detachable bean that you can take off whenever you want to in order to disable the implant
