I think it's important for kids to get a perspective on things like this. Actually taking them to refugee camps and Syria is way, way too much, though. I realize that the trip was taken before ISIS became the boogeyman that it currently is, but taking children into any occupied territory is something I'd never consider with my own children, relative safety or no.
The point can be made with some screened television programs, some age-appropriate literature, and having talks with people actually impacted by war such as refugees and veterans.
