Electronic Arts Inc. delayed the release of its next Battlefield video game, highlighting the challenges for established game makers to keep up with Fortnite, the shooting-game sensation that has taken the industry by storm.

The launch date of Battlefield V was delayed by four weeks to Nov. 20, and EA also cut its forecast for the fiscal year ending in March. The news sent the shares down as much as 8.7 percent on Thursday, the most since January 2016. Battlefield is a first-person shooter game, known for its realistic depiction of combat, and is one of EA’s biggest franchises.

“We’re updating our fiscal-year guidance to reflect the updated launch date for Battlefield V, the ongoing impact of foreign-exchange rate changes, and our current outlook for our mobile business,” Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen said in a statement.

The delay adds to recent setbacks for the video-game maker. Its earnings forecast on July 26 fell well short of Wall Street estimates, sending the shares tumbling. Patrick Soderlund, who runs EA’s worldwide game-development studios, is set to leave in October to pursue “his next life adventure.” And this week EA canceled three Madden Classic qualifier events following a shooting at an earlier competition in Florida.

EA, like much of the industry, is coping with a shift to mobile gaming. In a nod to the remarkable success of the every-man-for-himself shooter game Fortnite, EA said on June 9 it would include a battle-royale mode in the upcoming Battlefield V.

Fortnite, made by closely held Epic Games, has become a cultural phenomenon since its release last year, attracting more than 125 million players worldwide and causing the video-game industry to rethink its game designs and business models. Like Battlefield, it is also a first-person shooter game, but the two have an important difference: Battlefield’s fan base is made up of hard-core gamers, while Fortnite doesn’t depict combat realistically and has proven strong among more casual players.

In its statement, EA said it now sees net bookings of $5.20 billion for the fiscal year 2019 ending in March, down from $5.55 billion previously.

The shares fell to $117.61 at 10:48 a.m. in New York. The stock had climbed 22 percent this year through Wednesday, when it closed at $128.52.

EA vowed the delay would result in a better Battlefield experience, according to a blog statement.

“You’ve also spurred us to make some meaningful improvements to the core gameplay experience, including adjusting the gameplay tempo, improving soldier visibility and reducing player friction,” EA said. “You’ll see a lot of these reflected in our Open Beta that starts on September 6.”

It still fucking blows my mind that back in 2013, EA was called the worst company in America with fucking Bank of America in second place. How fucking scummy of a company do you have to be to outscum a goddamn bank? This news, while unsurprising, is still very satisfying to see and I only hope it gets worse
i guarantee you that there are companies out there that are much, much worse than EA

the only reason it got that title was because of reddit-fags that care about nothing except for their vidya

that being said, EA is definitely the worst gaming company out there and i'll rejoice whenever they finally get their comeuppance

Good. While I know this obviously isn't the end of them, their "diversity" and wokeness business approach causing them and their stock to eat shit is satisfying to see. So many good IPs in their clutches that are never gonna be seen again unless they die.
getting woke was the last nail in the (admitedly temporary) coffin.
EA has been pissing off people for a long time, and instead of fixing the problems they just shoved a woman and yelled
LOOK, THIS PERSON HAS A CUNT.. YOU HAVE TO LIKE THE CHINA.. THE VAGOO!! OR I HATE YOU TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT!!

and everyone left it.

edit: basically the crunchyroll of videogames

yeah, but honest question: who did the voting? Because if it's regular people, the so called gamers are a bunch of petty manchilds, so it wouldnt surprise me, if they managed to make Bank of america lose.

If you think that they are losing money because of some dumb culture war, then you are very mistaken.

I think EA's main problem is how stale their product line-up is right now, you look at their calendar and you can't see any game you would ever be excited about, sure, FIFA/Madden..etc may be strong moneymakers, but they are also franchises that don't really expand the capabilities of their studios, they will always be doomed to be the imitators and not the innovators, even among the other generic AAA companies.

Activision and Ubisoft actually try out new IPs and attempt to refresh existing ones, even if all those games ultimately come out soulless, because even they know that you need to roll the dice every once in a while and refresh your product line-up.

Not to be an EA apologist - because seriously, fuck 'em, but this is realistically the only choice they had. Releasing Battlefield V meant it would have to compete against Black Ops Royale and Red Dead Redemption 2. Plus releasing the game on Nov. 20 puts it out right before the long Turkey Day holiday here in the states. It's a bit of a gamble, esp. since no doubt we're going to be seeing a lot of games for cheap during Black Friday, but like I said, EA really doesn't have much of a choice.

Still, hope this one hurts, EA. This is what you get for fucking up Dead Space.

They're still fucked. The new release date coincides with the release of the New Pokemon Game.

Does anyone actually use Origin? It's Games for Windows Live 2.0. Ubisoft is just as bad though.
Honestly I think Origin is one of the better things EA has come out with in recent years. I've never had an issue with it (unlike Steam and its horrible support). It's a shame they got rid of those On The House promotions, they were sweet.

EA stocks always crash but then they go straight back up when retards fall for their latest AAA DLC&Microtransaction filled garbage game.
As much as I'd like to see EA go bankrupt it won't happen thanks to retarded consumers.

To be honest not many people are really that excited about the new Pokemon games, and that includes a lot of the Pokemon Community (I haven't seen anybody who is actually excited for it, the average Pokemon fan is just waiting for information on Gen 8 right now). Plus it's a completely different genre anyways, the average FPS fan isn't going to be torn between getting either Pokemon or Battlefield. It's very hard to say their fucked honestly.

EA only got voted in as worst because a bunch of reddit/4chan pissbabies stuffed the ballot with votes from alt accounts/proxies. A bunch of dipshits really angry about children's toys.

They won it twice actually.

Good, I hope they fucking suffer.
