As for making the game "non-woke," I made a post in the Mods to De-wokify games thread leading to an article about the [ORIENTATION] token that allows you to adjust how often characters are generated as straight, gay, etc. if that's a thing you want to modify.
I prefer to just have the abnormal animals butchered and have the abnormal dwarves to test my traps, like say a retractable bridge they were stationed on.

A trap for a trap.

Because sacrificing goblins to the magma Gods by throwing them is funny, also even the wooden cage is worth more than any goblin life.
I always have something I call a "therapy bridge." I can just assign any undesirable to a squad, or multiple undesirables, and they can "patrol" that particular bridge. Then when they're all there, some guy 30 Z-levels below can flip the switch and the "bridge" throws them all into magma.

This is so the flip switching dwarf doesn't have to experience trauma from witnessing the results of his actions.

I mean it's not like the flip switcher knew what was going on.

In most of my games, flip switcher is one of the most cheerful dwarves. (I literally pick a low stress dwarf for this job he is literally all I have to do is sometimes flip a switch?) Introduce trolley problems here.

I also minimize trauma from these massacres because most dwarves don't even know they happened at all.

Is there a guide to get this shit running with some graphics and a non-woke version? I wanted to pirate the steam version because I refuse to fund some tranny's bathtub HRT but I can't find a copy anywhere.
The game is freely available on the bay12 website so there is not a lot of interest in pirating it unfortunately there are no more tile sets other then the Steam version for the current patch. The last versions withe freely available tile sets are the 47.xx.xx versions they are perfectly serviceable and some even prefer the old version over the new ones the easiest way to get them would be to download the last release of the Lazy Noob Pack everything comes in a neet package and you can just select your favorite tileset.
As for the Steam version this shoud do it its a cople of patches behind but it is the latest major version

As much as i like the graphics the fact that it cant simulate seawaves, running water or show dead grass properly is a huge let down, ASCII feels so alive when you embark in an ocean and you can clearly see the sea with the mist and all of that crap it feels so much more inmersive even if it looks like you are hacking the CIA, and in the case of the grass ASCII does a good job at protraying the cursed biomes by being gray or mostly gray (btw can we talk about how shit it is that evil biomes are not purple but good biomes are indeed blue? shits unplayable man. Toady fix it plz)

Does seem a little weird and strays into the whimsical a bit much for my taste. Looks like it'll be optional in the settings, so no big deal. Maybe just a small patch to keep the artists busy?

The next big push will be “magic” so we are definitely going to a more high fantasy setting moving forward it seems.

I hope there rare. I’ll be pissed if I find a Dino before I see a kiwi in game

So, they just announced an update for june 25th that will be adding dinosaurs and various other extinct species like mammoths. No idea why and having dwarfs hunting trex's or using them as domesticated labor seems a little weird
I imagine the reasoning looks something like this: there are plenty of fictional races, why not add some historical ones too? And yeah, justifies having artistic staff, this will be like the release of the artist's work more than anything. The raws for these will be a pretty straightforward development. It lets them release something new while Tarn cooks magic up. I love how heavily gated the content is too. You can enjoy as much or little as you like.

Dwarf Fortress is probably the only game with ASCII graphics out there that actually looks better in ASCII form than with any complete tileset.
I can respect this view, but I don't share it. I'm a very visual person, but I managed NetHack all right. Never ascended, so I guess only so good. But I wouldn't enjoy DF half as much without the Steam release artwork. It's not perfect, but it's good enough, and I like how thorough.

This is a really weird thing to criticize when Dwarf Fortress has always included completely ahistoric original animals such as predatory birds the size of a horse, subterreanean sloths, anything that's a "giant" variation (so that's literally megafauna grandfathered into the game), and whatever a "moghopper" is.

It's not bad but my favorite was Meph+Vordak, a fairly intricate tileset for being 32x32. Some of it would have probably ended up in the Steam release if it didn't come out that Meph had ripped off a lot of the art. I could play it fine in ASCII though. Any time I crack out Nethack again, it's in ASCII because that's the way I know it. I've never used a tileset for Nethack. I was pretty good at it. Took me years to win it the first time, but then I started doing challenges like being a vegan atheist monk or a pacifist or a wizard who never used spells. There were people who did much tougher ones, though, like not just being a pacifist, but never eating food, and also wearing a blindfold through the whole run.

my favorite tileset was CLA, it is an ascii-like tileset, so everything still is ASCII, but not really, so a cat would be a C with a cat face on the top end of the letter
