Science Drug-resistant bacteria might already be in Canada, expert warns

Drug-resistant organisms are waging war on one of humanity’s most widely used health measures: anti-biotics.

Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease expert warned in an interview with CTVNews.ca on Tuesday that these organisms are already in Canada.

He was responding to a new report from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scientists, warning about the spread of “nightmare bacteria.”

“Antibiotics are an incredible tool. They’ve saved countless lives,” he said, but warned about the dangers of over using the drugs.

“We need to have appropriate stewardship over them,” he said, adding they’re “used and abused” every day.

Nightmare bacteria,” or “super bugs,” are terms used to describe bacteria, viruses, fungi, or other pathogens that evolve to resist antibiotics. That makes them harder for medical professionals to combat.

When organisms interact with antibiotics but are not entirely destroyed, it gives them a chance to develop resistance to those drugs.

“We know the bacteria can mutate and change in such a way where the antibiotics are no longer lethal, and it’s been an arms race with humans creating newer antibiotics and bacteria creating resistance to those,” Bogoch explained.

“And we’re going to lose the arms race every time.”

He pointed to the global agriculture industry, and specifically livestock from pigs to sheep to fish, as the primary area where antibiotics are overused.

“About 70 per cent of (antibiotic use) is in agriculture,” he said. “From an agricultural standpoint, it enables animals to grow bigger, but it obviously has significant detrimental effects in the creation of antimicrobial resistance.”

Bogoch highlighted the “One Health” concept — the idea that health care doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Human and animal health are linked. As the World Health Organization explains, “the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent.”

Over-reliance on antibiotics in animals can give organisms a chance to develop resistance, Bogoch warned, saying those resistant organisms can then jump from animals to humans.

Deadly diseases evolving​

Bogoch mentioned HIV and tuberculosis as two illnesses that can evolve capacity to resist drugs, making them significantly harder to cure, especially if health professionals do not have access to sophisticated laboratory equipment.

Tuberculosis kills “around a million (people) a year,” he said, adding “drug resistant tuberculosis in particular is a tough one.”

The World Health Organization put 2023’s death toll at 1.25 million people, with almost 11 million people infected with the disease that year.

“Worldwide, TB has probably returned to being the world’s leading cause of death from a single infectious agent,” reads the World Health Organization’s website, also calling TB “a major cause of deaths related to antimicrobial resistance.”

Canada reported 2,217 cases of TB in 2023. Over 10 per cent of those cases were drug resistant.

One concern for Dr. Bogoch is Tuberculosis’ ability to evolve into resistant strains. He noted MDR (multiple drug resistant) and XDR (extensively drug resistant) TB strains, that can resist different medications.

“Many of the cases are in low-resource settings or maybe delays in diagnostics,“ Bogoch said.

There may be challenges accessing patient treatments.”

It is especially challenging to keep TB at bay in low- and middle-income countries, he said.

The World Health Organization reports that ending the TB epidemic by 2030 is a target for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

TB drug resistance in 2023 was low and consistent with overall trends, the Public Health Agency of Canada reported this year.

That agency works with the federal, provincial, territorial governments, and Indigenous partners to work towards the elimination of TB, “Together, we can end TB,” their website reads.

Some good news is that phage therapy is becoming more and more well known in the West again and is a treatment option for specific anti-biotic resistant bacteria. It's even already been used in some cases with super bugs.
 
Progressives try to blame this on cattle, but that has way less of an effect. The cause for most antibiotic resistant organisms, from my understanding, is people starting antibiotics, then not finishing the regiment because they "feel better", which proliferates the bacteria that survived the initial shock and become resistant. Cattle ranchers do not do this, as they don't care if the cattle feel better, but rather that they do not get sick. That isn't to say that antibiotic overuse for cattle is a good thing, but one party is using is halfheartedly, and the other uses it seriously, which has very different effect. This of course is not getting into the other root cause, that is diseased third worlders flooding the first world and importing novel strains of diseases that we typically do not deal with, because properly screening foreigners to see if they have something like TB (or horrifying parasites like screw worm), as telling brown people "no" is the greatest sin one can commit.

Also, fun fact: women and homosexuals have been breeding antibiotic resistant STDs by having unprotected, promiscuous sex with diseased individuals, then not properly using the antibiotics that they are prescribed to cure the disease. There is currently already antibiotic resistant gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, and this is likely to grow as more exotic antibiotics are now being used to treat these self inflicted diseases. Imagine a future where fags and whores die of syphilis like it's the dark ages despite all of our technology.

Both are hard to transmit. HIV can be avoided by not fucking other men or being at orgies, and TB is a disease of squalor and poor sanitation and crowding.

The Uk had virtually eradicated TB. Then we got mass immigration. Now bits of London have Tb rates higher than the worst bits of the third world . We’ve also stopped using the BCG vaccine which was safe
They really need to crack down on antibiotic use. Some places do a lot better than others, but we all need to be on the same page. No antibiotics unless there's a verified bacterial infection, and then a schedule to rotate what antibiotics are being prescribed. Like I said, some places do these things already, and they're proven to work, but we have all got to get on the same page, otherwise we're going to end up in a world where simple infections are hyper lethal, just like before we had antibiotics in the first place.
None of that will work unfortunately. It’s not little Timmy getting antibiotics for his ear infection that’s driving this. It’s mass OTC usage in the third world, and farming usage. Bacteria a swap plasmids - little circles of DNA that often contain antibiotic resistance genes. When antibiotics are mass used in farming it creates resistance and those bacteria can swap plasmids with ones that infect humans too.
It’s the third world and farming that are driving it. When the colistin class of antibiotics was discovered they were intended for exactly what you describe - last resort stuff. Within a year the Chinese were found feeding it to pigs on an industrial scale

someone more knowledgeable than me can correct me if I'm wrong about this but I don't think the issue is over/misuse of antibiotics on the consumer individual level - the nightmare resistant pathogens come out of hospital infections and industrial agriculture

no I'm aware because of where I live but I track it and I just don't see a lot of backwash - is it different in the UK?
 
I thought this was about drug resistant gonorrhea, but Canadians are much worse.

The female bladder is less muscular and is worse at flushing out urine, especially through the jerry-rigged fake dick has hundreds of places bacteria can hide grow: strictures, kinks, hairballs, diverticulae, not to mention fistulas. Their long-term reliance on suprapubic catheter is another source of infection.

Not directly from person to person, but many bacteria can survive in the environment, to be picked up by unwary hands.

They have multiple rounds of hardcore antibiotics that don’t nuke the germs becasue their urinary tracts are so messed up. They have strictures, they have diverticuli, they have tubes being colonised by stuff. The bugs can hide away in a nice cosy biofilm and just swap all the plasmids like Pokémon cards.
That can spread - one nurse or orderly doesn’t wash hands or there’s some spray and now the next patient has it. And bacteria can swap plasmids - it’s almost like bacterial sex. Hospital acquired infections are a big problem.
