DOOM

Doom Guy is canonically Flynn Taggart. The story is absolutely going to divide people as much as, if not moreso, than Eternal.
I never understood the need to create lore or even a story in Doom. I like 2016 because the first thing Doom Guy does when there's a bit of exposition is to punch the monitor. I wish The Dark Ages didn't have out-of-character cutscenes. Doom Guy is there to kill and punch the evil creatures, not listen to Debra Wilson.

It's fine that there is it isn't like they exposit much, 3 games and 3 DLC's and we know he's basically the guy from the Books more or less some variation of Doom 1 and 2 and 64 played out, and he got dumped on Argent D'nur, he's still there to kill demons and nothing else, so nothing really changes beyond the fact we confirm what was hinted at in 2016, he's the OG, the one we played all the way back in the 90's on Windows 95.

Boooooooo. DLC teases a showdown with the Hell Council, but doesn't deliver. Serious blue balling.

That aside, it's quite a solid DLC. About five hours on Hurt Me Plenty, but finishing the campaign gives you a Master Key: this unlocks alternate routes, more collectibles, harder combat encounters, and another boss (although I haven't done the work to get to him yet). Your shield is also fully restored - so all the runes are active again - and the final tier of upgrades for your suit and spear are unlocked.

Super weapon is the shotgun from 1993. Actually kind of amazing.

It's more Dark Ages, with the option to use an Eternal-esque skill set instead of the shield. Other than the cock tease I mentioned, I don't have any issues with it. There's plenty for sweatier players to get into, and enough spectacle for everyone else. Just a shame it is absolutely coloured by the id firings.

It's really fucking bleak out here.

can't say his designs aren't badass as hell, well its really the fucking end for DOOM, they'll have to crib his aesthetics going forward and it won't work, it never does, and he basically revitilized the aesthetic interest in the franchise, even people who don't like the narrative turn on Doomguy can't tell me with a straight face he doesn't have a cool as hell design.

nu-id isn't the Carmack company. They were stewards of a legendary IP, one which Carmack himself didn't manage too well, and completely cocked it up. I feel nothing for them, none of that nostalgia associated with Keen on my 286 transfers over to nu-id.

Doom 2016 was a lot of fun. Eternal physically hurt my hands to play plus was tonally grating with all the fanfic-tier wiki-style lore. Still dont know what a Deag is.

TDA tanked because Eternal was enough of the wrong direction that people lost interest. Doomguy with a gladiator shield in some kind of fantasy kingdom wasn't what anyone was asking for.

Carmack left 15 years ago. That's when the id associated with my teenage years died. It was bittersweet, since Rage sucked. Quake III was 27 years ago. Doom 3 was 22 years ago. It's gone.

They came so close. They made a good game. It felt like Doomguy just woke up, hasn't had a good day since he landed at E1M1 Hangar, and was just pissed off that those demons were at it again. Instead of more of that? Just crap. Oh well. Should have made something good instead of fucking up.

I managed to beat (read: beat, not complete) the DLC. It's OK. I think that, like the DLC for Eternal, it'll be something that I like the more I return to it. I'll reserve my final score as I haven't truly explored everything there is to explore.

The big gimmick for the DLC besides the Spear is exploration, and by exploration I mean: imagine if TT made a DOOM Lego game, that's basically how it's structured. You've got a hub, and several areas that you can't return to until "End Game" (read: Free Play) Story is a bit of a wet fart to be honest, and also introduces some retcons (?) namely around the Praetor suit. It also gives us some backstory for this version of Doom guy, who is canonically named Flynn Taggart. I didn't really care that instead of showing us the cause of why this version of the slayer hates the demons so much it instead gives us why this version of doom guy assaulted his commanding officer.

It's not what I would call the sendoff Nu-doom deserved, but lets be honest this was pretty clearly not meant to that anyways. That said, I think it was fitting to step into the suit we started this with one more time.

but it does, because that's the backstory to the Doom 1 marine, we know the backstory going forward, its Doom 1, Doom 2, and Doom 64.

This is true. I find it hard to care at all. 2016 was fun once, and that's it. No mod support, no community, no longevity. You get a console cuckolded map editor, and that's it. I didn't like Eternal's gameplay and TDA felt precision designed for Marvel watching soylents and /r/games posters.

There was arcade mode that was an absolute blast to go through. Loading up on caffeine and heavy metal and trying to S rank every map on Ultra Nightmare was some of the most fun I ever had in a game, even with it glitching a couple times and forcing me to redo a level. I was disappointed when I first saw that Eternal didn't have it but by the end I at least understood why it was gone.

I also forgot to add that the art direction for the DLC was also very strong, probably the best it's been since 2016. There's a level set in a bone desert and it feels straight out of 2016's multiplayer. seriously, go look at some pictures of those maps they went bonkers on them art wise.

You wouldn't by chance have the codex's that go into his early backstory would you? It's the one thing I'm curious about in this game, for better or worse.
