They did it even with low turnout.

It was the kind of crowd where the only people who showed up were retired boomers who have the free time to vote. And turnout was low in northern Virginia.

Now think about how those kind of elections will go when people have had to pay over $6 a gallon for summer blend gas for 6 months.

The idea behind the electoral college was back in 1787 to ensure the smaller states got proportional representation and it wasn't just a "tyranny of the majority"; also they didn't want the president to be basically selected by getting the majority vote from cities, so he would have to also visit other, more rural regions, and thus be "diversely represented" (back when diversity applied to more than just 'skin color'.)

The problem with current electoral politics is that not only has the size of the nation, the amount of urban areas, the population AND population concentration changed; but the whole system has gone outta whack with other additions like FPTP and the political party system in general (Remember, Washington himself figured political parties would fuck everything up).

There is some value in electoral college, but the way it is now seems VERY weird, especially since in many of the states like Cali or Texas or the like, it discourages voting (Why vote R in Cali or D in Texas if you're gonna lose anyway?) I would prefer at least having the electoral college be proportioned by the state votes i.e. if Cali has 55 votes and 80% vote D but 20% vote R, Cali gives 44 to the D candidate and 11 to the R. Of course, this will also lead to other problems (what if the cut is not so clear and dry), but I do think it'd be a better representative of what the nation wants than what's happening now, while still avoiding any "tyranny of the majority" issues.

they truly don't understand how a market economy works at all, and when you do explain it to them as I've done with family members, they immediately disengage with "I don't care if America becomes a third world country as long as it's American." They are willing to let everyone starve to death, so long as it doesn't disrupt Queen Trump's war with reality and the narrative.

Oh they don’t vote in the midterms. Too busy doing meth and/or working 70 hours a week.
In the past Trump could throw them off by blaming democrats. But that trick is old. I have my suspicions about who will be blamed next.
