The Twitter clones have been comparing the ballroom to the Truman reconstruction. This misses a few points. First, the Truman restoration was necessary. The White House was falling apart. Things were breaking through the floor and the whole building was in danger of collapse. It wasn't a vanity project. Second, the interior was largely put back the way it was. They added bathrooms and moved a staircase, but it maintained substantial continuity with the prior layout. Third, Truman actually got funding from Congress, he didn't solicit bribes. Finally, Truman made minimal alterations to the exterior. He replaced the south portico awnings with a balcony and made some small changes to the north portico, I think that's about it. Trump's ballroom is entirely new. Moreover, it's about the size of the residence, maybe larger. It turns the White House from an iconic house with two mostly-symmetrical wings into an event venue with a house hanging off the side.

In principle I don't give a shit if any president wants to do this but it always begs the question. Which cultures will be left out? He's definitely not going to celebrate the Lunar New Year even though people outside of China celebrates it too.
Would we ever see a Christmas tree in Xi or Modi's office? No. Hey, I think it'll be cool but that's not happening, these deeds are never reciprocated, it's all for show. It's a stupid lame ritual.

OK, the old-timey sink is awesome. but that bathroom could have used a few minor tweaks, like replacing the carpet with tile and taking down the mirror over the bathtub, which gives pay-by-the-hour motel room vibes. That may have already been done after 1992. What it did NOT need was to be gutted and Trumptized.

He's basically a poor person of low intelligence's idea of what a rich person is. His idea of opulence is just putting fucking gold all over everything. It looks like shit.

Yeah. If a president wants to make changes to the White House, okay. It's the president and it's their white house. But that doesn't mean the design choices aren't up for debate among non presidents.
 
If they'd yoinked the windows out carefully they could've auctioned them off. People buy all sorts of shit if there's a big name attached to it. The rest of the exterior is mostly a facade over brick and concrete so getting recognisable sections off it intact is unlikely. However, I expect that the balustrades will be relatively easy to take down intact if they haven't already been hulksmashed by heavy machinery.
I wonder what they did with the interiors.

Possibly unpopular opinion: the Lincoln bathroom looks like a hotel bathroom and the pic makes the flooring look like my parents' 80s living room carpet. It's interesting as a time capsule but aesthetically meh.
