I'd take the fact he has custody of the kids as a sign of his own good character personally.

Very few fathers actually try for joint, let alone sole custody. The signs are there that he actually gives a shit.
 
Sure you're a cuck if you marry a single father but there is one massive upside. By getting a man who already has a kid, you get to skip getting pregnant/giving birth altogether and you may even get to skip the diaper changing phase of the kid's life. Plus, it's cheaper than adopting.
