Do you think Trump will take Greenland and Canada?

it is mostly shitposting. canada is not going to happen, and if it did it would be a net negative for america. greenland is a bit more possible, but still very unlikely. id be surprised if trump even mentions greenland again 6 months into his presidency.

I was surprised to learn the US has a Space Force base in Greenland already. Also, apparently this is not a new idea that Trump just came up with, it's been discussed for years. That being said, Nothing Ever Happens.

problem is adding a new state means adding 2 senators. dems obviously don't want to add a state that will create 2 republican senators and vice versa. same reason DC and puerto rico will never become states. Unless both parties agree to do two states at once (ie greenland and puerto rico) or if one party has enough of a majority to do whatever they want, it will never happen. if greenland ever joins the union, it will probably be as another territory

Canada is purely posturing for trade negotiation purposes. Adding multiple states and the population of Canada onto our voter rolls and political system is an unrealistic logistical nightmare. Republicans would be insane from a balance of power standpoint to even risk such a thing. He isn't going to annex a NATO member, and they won't come willingly for the most part.

Greenland I believe is a great deal more likely. He has talked about purchasing it historically, and the idea has been floated in the past outside of the Trump sphere. Would be a terrific "vanity" acquisition for Trump to cement his legacy while being a great deal less consequential than Canada. They won't ever be made a state in the near future with a population of 60,000, a tenth of Wyoming. I could see a deal being reached with Denmark, either for outright ownership or increased partnership.

He won't use military force, in either case. That's purely a bluff to not take any cards out of his hand.

I hope not, sharing a border with Canada is bad enough
Greenland though sure why not
I'd rather have my no tax on overtime and affordable groceries first, but that's too much to ask

Canada is already controlled by the US. Canada's role on the world stage is to vote in lockstep with the US. It's why Canada is in the G7, it's why Canada had a security council seat. Once the UN Security Council became a game of pocket vetoes, Canada was out. Internally the Canadian Government does have some sovereignty. However, the US will not allow Canada to become a failed state. The US has meddled in Canadian politics before to get what it wants and Trump's current bluster is just being overt about it.

As for Greenland. Ownership of Greenland gives the US near total control of the North Atlantic. A naval base on the tip, another airbase to compliment Thule and the US has even closer control of Transatlantic flight and shipping. NORAD is seeking to expand into the maritime domain, and this would play into that as well.

As well US control of Greenland means the US can control both entrances to the Northwest Passage. On top of having the will and money to expand their arctic presence. It would counter the Russians and of course further embarrass the Canadians.

Let's just make all of North America one country. The Great country of Canada, United States, and Mexico ( C.U.M.) would be the most powerful nation on earth. Without borders with Canada we could trade freely, and we could rescue Canada from the troons. No border with Mexico means we could launch a full scale war on the cartels, and we could import spicy Latina wives for all the white male American libertarians. Lets hope that Trump makes the dream of C.U.M. happen.

No one's had any use for Greenland since the Vikings, idk why anyone would want it.

I feel like people would only want it for status, territory for territory's sake. Pointless dick waving.
We have an airbase in Greenland for early warning. My grandpa was stationed there at one point

But yeah, there's no point in taking over Greenland if they already allow us to have our airbase there.

He does this all the time. He wildly speculates and then he walks it back slightly based on reaction.

No dramatic change happened his first term. This will probably be a repeat but I hope not.

I don't think he will. I hope he's not actually honestly considering it, I wouldn't wanna have to deal with the clusterfuck that would be trying to somehow buy it from Denmark or god forbid invading. It's mostly ice up there anyways, what value really is there other than for meme and to flex the 'murica muscle?

This is the most bizarre conversation, ever. Musk wants to fund World War Three.. he wants to live in a video game and become World Emperor. Why people can't see this is beyond me.
