The FBI has recently created a digital request form for people effected by certain malware games on the steam platform.
and issued warnings to users of steam
Given the current political climate I believe that these forms are to build a profile to use against Valve under a court of law in order to "protect mintors"
and their language seems indicative of that as well.
take for instance "If you and/or your minor dependent(s) were victimized" c'mon they're not even trying to hide their ulterior motive.
I suggest that if you really want to submit information but signal that you don’t want it used against Valve. explicitly state your intent, (again I strongly STRONGLY motion against doing this, do not trust your government.)
place this footnote in whatever information you submit:
"This report is provided solely to assist with identifying the malware authors. I am not asserting fault or negligence by Valve or the Steam platform."
now this does not that legally prevent agencies from including your report in an investigative dataset, summarizing victim impact in court filings, or sharing evidence with their prosecutors but it does increase the burden of proof that the fbi would need to hold against valve for corporate liability and if used against your wishes can result in reputational damages. having said that the only guaranteed way to stop the fbi from using actual victims as a scapegoat to attack steam legally is to just not give them any information to work with. and besides that I doubt you'd get a payout anyways, our government more likely than not would try to scam you out of any legal winnings.
