It's like everything is just one color in the remake, and it's this dull beige color that communicates no emotion or artistic thought. Look at the sky; both take place at midday but the original looks darker which adds to the tragedy of the scene. There is a strong use of shadows and darker palettes in order to contrast with the time of day. The remake meanwhile doesn't have that special lighting because doing so would detract from the "realism," but in doing so it fails to emulate the raw emotion of the original.

I never liked how this looked from the beginning, but I'm stunned at how bad it is.

Though I wouldn't go as far as saying that I was looking forward to this, I was open considering how much I enjoyed the way Favreau expanded The Jungle Book, turning it into a mixture of Kipling and Disney while still being its own thing. I thought there were certain areas in The Lion King that could benefit from such an approach. But it looks like they made a checklist that will probably be inferior to the original on a scene by scene basis.

Wow, that looks like ass. And the delivery was ass too. Jeremy Irons FTW.

Yes. Irons draws out the phrase out of this hedonistic pseudo-sexual sadistic pleasure, as if he's attempting to prolong this moment, this perfect climax of ultimate fraternal betrayal. This is his Rubicon, the moment where his years of planning realize into action at long last to irrevocably turn from 'fantastic scheme' to murder. Irons nails this perfectly, the smallest, slightest bit of hesitation vocally before Scar commits himself fully to the act, and then plunges headlong into the thrill of manifesting his scheme. Paired with the god-tier animation (Did you notice the subtle waver of Scar's eyes as he searches over Mufasa's face, trying to capture every expression to save in his sadism spank bank?, while Mufasa has his locked onto his brother's eyes, trying to make a connection of empathy and hope?) and relationship we've built with the characters, its an emotional gut-punch.

Contrast that with delivery of Chiwetel Ejiofor, who might have never seen the 94 movie or even read the entire script. He has no emotion, no anticipation, no satisfaction - just a flat statement with some extra periods in it. How did the recording session go?
Favreau: "Okay, draw the line out."
Ejiofor: "Long....live....the....king."
Favreau: "No, we need to draw it out more. And don't emphasize any part of it."
Ejiofor: "Long..........live.........the..........king."
Favreau: "Still too lively. Can you deaden your voice a bit?"
Ejiofor: "Long..........live.........the..........king."
Favreau: "Alright, there's still life in that line, I almost felt a tinge of emotion. Once more, but cold and lifeless as a vector file. With more pausing."
Ejiofor: "Long."
Favreau: "...."
Ejiofor: "Live."
Favreau: "...."
Ejiofor: "The."
Favreau: "...."
Ejiofor: "King."
Favreau: "...."
Favreau: "We'll just autotune and fix it in post like we have to do for Glover and Beyonce when they "sing". Nobody had high expectations for you anyway, hakuna matata!"

Wow, maybe they should have gotten Charles Dance to voice Scar. He can say Long Live the King and not make it sound like ass.

Or he’ll, even Vera Farmiga can say the line better lol

Slow down there, are you suggesting having white people be cast in this film? Haven't you heard? This story is set in Africa and must reflect the Africanness of the Lions, which are acting out a story based on a white guys play, directed by a white guy for a company owned by a white guy, with an original made famous by a proportionally white cast animated by whites and marketed by whites to whites, muh supremacy, etc.

But the voice cast has to be non-African blacks now, because Africa and representation. Yas queen, slay.

Now if this was about Danish mermaids, of course, then race doesn't matter. Don't you read the trades?

They should have gotten Jeremy Irons back. The only one that fits is Alfre Woodard. She's so fun but of course wasted in this adaptation. Also her og actress is dead so yeah.......

I still don't get why they cast Screaming Faggot on the Street and Weed Hog as Timon and Pumbaa because........no. Nathan and Ernie are still alive sooooo
