Wow, that looks like ass. And the delivery was ass too. Jeremy Irons FTW.
Yes. Irons draws out the phrase out of this hedonistic pseudo-sexual sadistic pleasure, as if he's attempting to prolong this moment, this perfect climax of ultimate fraternal betrayal. This is his Rubicon, the moment where his years of planning realize into action at long last to irrevocably turn from 'fantastic scheme' to murder. Irons nails this perfectly, the smallest, slightest bit of hesitation vocally before Scar commits himself fully to the act, and then plunges headlong into the thrill of manifesting his scheme. Paired with the god-tier animation
(Did you notice the subtle waver of Scar's eyes as he searches over Mufasa's face, trying to capture every expression to save in his sadism spank bank?, while Mufasa has his locked onto his brother's eyes, trying to make a connection of empathy and hope?) and relationship we've built with the characters, its an emotional gut-punch.
Contrast that with delivery of Chiwetel Ejiofor, who might have never seen the 94 movie or even read the entire script. He has no emotion, no anticipation, no satisfaction - just a flat statement with some extra periods in it. How did the recording session go?
Favreau: "Okay, draw the line out."
Ejiofor: "Long....live....the....king."
Favreau: "No, we need to draw it out more. And don't emphasize any part of it."
Ejiofor: "Long..........live.........the..........king."
Favreau: "Still too lively. Can you deaden your voice a bit?"
Ejiofor:
"Long..........live.........the..........king."
Favreau: "Alright, there's still life in that line, I almost felt a tinge of emotion. Once more, but cold and lifeless as a vector file. With more pausing."
Ejiofor:
"Long."
Favreau: "...."
Ejiofor:
"Live."
Favreau: "...."
Ejiofor:
"The."
Favreau: "...."
Ejiofor:
"King."
Favreau: "...."
Favreau: "We'll just autotune and fix it in post like we have to do for Glover and Beyonce when they "sing". Nobody had high expectations for you anyway, hakuna matata!"
