Discord users are cancelling their Nitro subscriptions after the popular chat app launched its new mobile layout globally.

Months after Discord’s new mobile layout first became accessible through an in-app Easter egg, the company announced on December 5, 2023, that it will be rolling out to users globally.

This replaces the original app layout that many have become used to, prompting a bit of backlash regarding the change.

Due to the update, users on social media have said they’re canceling their Nitro subscriptions as a way to boycott the changes.

Discord mobile layout update leads to backlash​

In a reply to Discord’s update announcement on Twitter, a user asked if there would be the ability to revert to the original Discord mobile UI.

The company replied that the old layout is no longer going to be available, and users aren’t exactly happy with that answer. In response, many have called for people to cancel their Nitro subscription.

“Cancelling nitro. You have no idea how much efficiency and money your ‘update’ will cost me,” one user replied.

Another said: “Yo Discord, I’m canceling my nitro Thanks for the update I never asked for, mobile app was just fine.”

“If they don’t fix this by the time my nitro is up, I will not be resubscribing,” a third user commented.

It’s unknown whether Discord would be willing to revert the new changes, but we’ve reached out for comment and will update you should they respond.

That said, the redesign is bad and unnecessary, and some functions are worse like searching for words in a server (now you search by channel instead of the entire server). My guess is that they have to justify having someone making the UI in the payroll so they have to come up with work for them to do.

The only mute/deafen options with icons are the ones that affect your own audio.

Performance is measurably worse, the things chugging for me loading a single 2-person server of light text chatting. It no longer reopens to the last channel/server you were in, instead defaulting to the 'Messages' tab - This is just one of those needlessly annoying changes where the application got actively worse for no good reason. Some people have said they find the new dark theming harsher, I have no strong opinion there.

I use mobile discord maybe once every couple of days, I used it today after updating, loads just as slow as I remember it opening and my phone is an old piece of shit, after restarting my phone it opened to the last channel of the last server I had open as well.

I've never paid for nitro and I never will, but other than the UI being uglier it acts exactly how I remember.
Discord is still gay.

Here's an idea: Just don't use Nitro. At all. Don't boycott the app by not paying for something that you don't need anyway.

The update is just a nuisance. The most notable inconvenience is selecting channels in a server. You used to get a small view of the chat and were able to swipe to open it. Now the swipe is gone (you have to tap the channel, which seems minor but is a major step back in convenience) and the channel list fills up the whole side of the screen.

I can't wait for the next redesign which gives you a default LGBTP color scheme and requires voice activation plus a TOS addition banning pedophobic slurs.

I saw someone saying "Sync Contacts" in the Privacy and Safety settings was automatically turned on after the update.

Mine stayed off, but I guess you should check your settings.
