The race was a pretense for ICBM development on both sides so you have to factor in their own hypothetical bullshit and whether it would have been worth it even with a smoking gun, which they probably didn't have, given Americans' natural reality distortion field and the potential to end up worse off by looking like a sore loser--Russia doesn't live in an empty void like the US. They didn't even point the finger for some of their own disasters that were pretty plausibly CIA or whatever.

We did in fact land. It would have taken an unprecedented effort to have faked such a thing at the time. Now, it might be even harder, not to fake the footage but to get away with it, especially because of the amount of space enthusiasts who could debunk something that is not actually happening. Anyways NASA left equipment up there such as retroreflectors directed back to Earth, which means you can prove that it happened just by shining a high powered laser to specific spots on the moon and recording it. Missions after the initial landing would have been even more difficult to fake, such as ones utilizing the rovers.

I don't think they faked the other landings. I just think that if the first landing on the moon failed, likely resulting in the Astronauts being killed on live TV around the world. It would be the biggest political blow to a country in human history. So they decided not to leave it to chance.

The soviets failed due to a lack of focus and internal conflicts between the two main design bureaux in charge of the project.
NASA did not return to the Moon after Apollo because maintaining the technical architecture was far too expensive. NASA initially believed that all exploration goals would be achieved by the time of Apollo 20 and that the next logical step was to build an outpost and then a permanent base on the Moon.
Congress saw the cost of the whole thing, freaked out and terminated the program, agreeing to fund 7 landings, a space station and nothing more. Then they ensured that all the technical know-how (assembly lines, tooling, personnel) was lost (to ensure that humanity will get nowhere for the next 50 years or so).
The decision was taken before Apollo 11 landed btw.

But why bother wasting the money from the development of the first launch? I agree that NASA wouldn't have wanted to publicly lose multiple highly trained astronauts on live TV and it would have been a blow to national morale in general, but they had already lost several astronauts before even getting into orbit. They knew the risks and kept going. And the risk of a faked landing being exposed would have been way worse than simply giving the USSR ammo.

This is pure speculation, but the best thing would be to have the astronauts go up, do an orbit of the Moon, like Apollo 10, and have a tape ready to broadcast back. If I was a government purely concerned with the optics.
