Just started watching after engorging myself on memes and ytps. I remember it mostly as a show my mom used to love, and as such I have vague memories of parts of it. I rememebr Trinity, Doakes, that lady who was obsessed with rape, bits and pieces.

Finished episode 4 and I basically know nothing about the actual plot of S1, so I'm gonna avoid this thread for fear of spoilers mostly. That being said, given it's 9 seasons long, I am asking what is, if any, the drop-off point for the show. Nothing stays good for 9 seasons. X-Files sure didn't. Twin Peaks has large swathes of weak arcs. And although Miami Vice clearly did, I did personally enjoy a lot of the goofy stupid S4 episodes. For me that drop-off was almost everything after Crockett
regains his memories
.

So yeah, what season does Trinity show up and at what point does it become trash? Also, of the news series, which are worthwile if at all?

Trinity is in Season 4.
Season 5 is kinda mid, 6 is when it gets really dumb. 7 is slightly better cause it has a decent big bad, and 8 is just fucking retarded.

New Blood is... okay, so is Original Sin. Resurrection is kino, though

First season is the best season. The next two are a slight dip but still serviceable. But Dexter gets plot armor that is impossible to ignore. Fourth season is the best season of the show and has the best villain in the entire series in Trinity. Seasons five through eight are a colossal mess and will be taxing to watch. But they are simple to follow at least.

The prequel and sequel shows are mediocre and only hardcore Dexter fans defend them. If you just want strong writing and acting you won't find it in this series outside of the first four seasons. Dexter premiered in 2006 and we are still getting more shows and are nowhere near an actual ending.

The consensus is Season 1-4 is the best of the show and there is dip in quality that only gets worse as time goes on. Some people argue the show gets bad as soon as season 2.

Beyond that it is much more debatable, my personal take is season 1-5 is the best chunk of the show as far as it feels like a good connected story, after that it feels more like unrelated side-missions and random twists.

As for the spin-offs Resurrection is the most popular one, and New Blood is the most skippeable. Whether you enjoy Original Sin depends on how much you enjoy the plot of Season 1 of the Original Series.

Thanks, bros, gonna go back to watching before I have to kill 1 million niggers on November 1st. Fuck my career choices.

I didn't really like seasons 5 or 6 much, but the first episode of season 5 is one of the best episodes of the series

Though I feel you're (understandably), asking the wrong question. In the same way people will wrongly say The Walking Dead "went downhill" at some point (it did not, it was consistently uneven as a show from the beginning), people will claim Dexter declines in quality over time without recognizing the show always kind of had the same problems at the beginning and the end.

That doesn't mean some seasons aren't better than others, but I always thought it was a borderline "good enough" show that ultimately disappointed. I wonder if you'll feel similarly after finishing it.

Última edición:
At the end of the day, just watch the entire show and the spin-offs, keeping in mind that season 5 onwards, the show drops in quality but is still watchable, and that out of the spin-offs, they go from passable/good enough with a retarded finale, to pretty good, to really fucking great.

No reason to stop watching the show unless you really genuinely can’t stand the last seasons, but even if you can’t, you definitely need to watch Resurrection afterwards.

But, yeah, just watch the whole thing. It never becomes unwatchable. Just not worthy of a rewatch at worst.

I think this is a very valid take. I've got some fond feelings about S5, but I think it's largely that this episode was so good (that last scene is as bleak as the last scene of S4). S5 was also the first season where the writers genuinely disappointed me, S4 seemed to completely blow up the board and leave him facing more than he could handle
and resolved all of it by hitting the reset button by the end of the season.

You can watch through S4 and watch the first couple episodes of S5 and tap out without any regrets. You won't hate your life if you continue, but you'll notice an empty space in your soul where genuine interest in what was going on used to be.

Dexter was never prestige TV, but it generally felt like the character was going somewhere until that feeling started to stall in S5. It's not that big developments didn't happen, it's that they would always happen with some expectation of
the writers saying "well, that was a fun diversion, now we're going back to the usual. They had a few false starts that didn't help in this regard.
