For Canada its an unfortunate side-effect of our gov't pushing anti-American propaganda. Which trickles down everywhere. The Canadian gov't will pass laws that are in reaction to the USA or just to show how better Canada is than the USA.
I can remember a teacher of mine talking about how dumb America is compared to Canada. What is ironic is that Canadians have been leaving to the US at about 100k a year, mostly white Canadians who have skills and means to move south. Which really shits on the idea that Canada is better than America when people are jumping ship. Fucking Boomers are what we have up here for the most part and they are unfortunately easily scared into anti-American propaganda. Considering they're our biggest customers its a case of shooting off our feet to spite the Americans.
