as a DMC Superfan who has consumed everything canon to the true and honest DMC universe.. it has bits and bobs from the real canon, which makes it frustrating the stuff that isn't.
I guess I should be happy it isn't DmC level fuck up, but its absolutely off kilter here, and really? no Danial Southworth as Vergil? THE Vergil Mocap and voice actor? it was bad enough Rueben got yoinked for.. basically fucking nothing in the end, but no Daniel? its just not fuckin vergil with out his VA work.
Honestly, I respect DmC more than the nepobaby pajeet's show. DmC was a misguided attempt to "appeal to western audiences" (aside from the fact DMC ALREADY appealed to the western audience as-is) that was at least visually interesting. Dante was still a smartass albeit a more obnoxious one and Capcom getting roasted so hard they removed Vergil's fedora was gold. People got a bug up their ass over the mop gag (myself initially included), but Capcom eventually caved and added a skin with white hair as the default. I actually enjoyed the needling brother dynamic between the brothers, minus the obligatory last-minute Vergil fight asspull. They just had to get that one in there before the runtime was over. The Definitive version even goes as far as to remove the weapon affinity penalties so you can truly combo shit however you'd like. Also, Combichrist's Never Surrender is a nice change of pace from nu-metal vocals followed by whiney chorus section.
Like you said, they get SOME shit right in the show and completely miss or skew other obvious details. For me, the biggest standouts are:
- Dante being oblivious to his source of strength. In DMC3, at his youngest, at the age of 18, was aware of his lineage. He already knew about his father and mother. One of the very first lines in the first cutscene is Arkham asking Dante if he's the son of Sparda. The "whoa, I'm a superhero" shtick is pure Marvel brain shit. Even though he doesn't awaken his Devil Trigger until mid-game, it's glaringly obvious from the get-go that Dante isn't a regular human and he's well aware of it.
- Lady being a foul-mouth girlboss. Even though she started off as a rightfully cold, quiet and untrusting character, she got chattier as she aged but never came across as a bitch trying to sound tough. Her redesign is ass and takes away the lore significance of her weapons and their namesakes.
- Dante struggling at ALL against Lady. Again, back to DMC3, we already had a Lady fight, and the concluding cutscene makes it extremely obvious that Dante is just wearing her out so she'll calm down and let him continue. At no point is she even a remote match to Dante, though she does get her badass moments in cutscenes and the credit roll fight. All that to say, Lady is a badass, not a hardass, and they fucked it up.
- Muh "the demons are misunderstood and it's humans that are bad". I won't lie, the military rolling in to absolutely demolish demons to the tune of American Idiot is kino in ways that I'm sure Adi Shankar never intended. His comparisons between immigrants from war torn shithole countries and demons are closer than he knows. I'm so sick and tired of the misunderstood villain trope. Not every story needs a redemption arc for evil, it just needs to be a plot device for the protagonists to use as a beatstick. Keep the gay political commentary out of my WOO JACKPOT demon beating show.
- Smallest detail of the four but the most jarring, WHY ARE ANGI AND RUDRAS' HEADS ON THEIR BODIES AND NOT THE HILT OF THE SWORDS? It's such a baffling design change. Why go through the work of putting them in for memberberries when you can't even get the design right? A&R were one of my favorite weapons and it took a while to pry myself away from using them and Rebellion exclusively. Their cutscene is that perfectly-placed Capcom charm of the era and the fight itself had a cool dynamic.
