Do you guys believe in demonic possession, or were they just the skitzocows of the pre-internet era?
 
I imagine all people who unironically mention demons on the internet to be this guy:

It can certainly happen, but I'd think the machinations of Satan are subtler than that. So you're not likely to see it happen very often, compared to the various self-serving sins mankind commits.
 
Demons, black magic, witches, pagans (village dweller), hell, the dreaded occult... it's all just Christianity's (Abrahamic) negative and distorted framing of pre-existing ideas, knowledge and practices. They just tried to make everything sound scary to keep people committed to the new Jewish religion.

Don't worry about it. You probably know about those evangelical churches where a big crowd listens to a preacher talk about God and Jesus.
When I was a kid there was a channel that broadcast the service of a certain church (I don't remember if it was evangelical or from what country it was from). And sometimes the participants would bring one or two people who were ill or acting crazy because they were "possessed" by a demon or evil spirit. So the priest would face them and pronounce that phrase I wrote before, which more or less means "demon, get out/holy spirit, get in". Like some kind of exorcism. And the people in question would then be magically cured.

I grew up in what amounts to a super evangelical cult. I noped out as soon as I could. Still have members with huge empty eyes and smiles trying to convince me to rejoin the flock so I can also spend my every last spare penny on my salvation. If you've never seen the face of a cult member it is something else. I'd call it a mix of despair, hope, and depression. I'm kinda into Shinto now.
 
I've seen some shit irl, but tbh I've seen enough other shit on the onlines that I can roll with "people are really just this fucking spastic" regardless of being oppressed by Someshmuckial or whoever
 
It's more common than you think. One of the reasons why it doesn't get talked about is not just because of atheists but also because Christians don't want to recognize it because they think children and teens will get interested enough find out about it. The big exception I guess is the Catholic Church that talks about modern possession openly. The most common cause of possession in my opinion is solo spirit communication without safeguards that goes on too long.

You’re thinking of Jerry Marzinsky. Here’s his book. He’s made me rethink my casual lifelong dismissal of these topics.

I will edit this when I find a good video to link.

Basically, he was a psychologist at multiple state mental hospitals, and treated thousands of schizophrenics; far more than most mental health pros see in a career.

He noticed some patterns about the voices that schizophrenics hear, and started trying to help the patients resist them. Fascinating story, but he eventually became convinced these voices were not coming from inside the schizophrenics’ heads.

I will add more later when I have some time.
