Well, unfortunately the people who came after him did a shitty job. This is like the 3rd time in mostly modern history that Catholicism has had these issues. You can't blame people for abandoning the Faith and disavowing heretical Popes. It's happened before and it will happen again. It is not a testament to God, or their faith, but rather a testament to the weaknesses the system of Catholicism has to contend with. It's very easily corruptible. It happens. Our lives are brief though. We don't have time to support a broken system that we can't fix in our lifetimes. Some people will dedicate themselves to fixing it. Others will not. They will practice religion in a way that better suits them.
