- how many people does it take to pull off something like this?
- does it cost money or is it just a matter of setting it up on a single computer and then activating hundreds/thousands of other people's PCs without their knowledge?

Just wanted to point out that custom captcha solutions aren't that difficult even before AI. There are computer vision libraries that make it a lot easier, no need to do all the math yourself.

How much did it cost them to run that botnet?

Probably at least 5 figures per hour, if it's multi-Tbps. That's what the owner might charge, the actual cost to the owner is risk and time. They aren't paying for the bandwidth they're using for the attack since it's compromised devices.

Someone with money and someone with a botnet. The botnet might be thousands of malware infected devices. Anything with an internet connection works. Null might be battling fridges and smart toasters right now.
