Ares in myth is complex.
Ares HAS good qualities but he also has bad ones. Not saying he is an evil (or non-complex) god.
First things first, Ares isn't the confirmed successor. Every kid of his is in the running. What matters is who is capable of overthrowing the king of the gods. That is tradition. Ares does not get respect because he doesn't have what it takes to do that. Athena does and she gets respect. She is also the forerunner in the race to succeed Zeus. She is one of the kids Zeus had with his original wife (Metis) and thus she is more "legitimate" as she inherited her mother's domain of wisdom.
Ares IS capable when he really tries to be. Also, he is one of the fastest gods so he can keep up with Hermes.
I always thought of Mars as an older Ares. That being said, he retained some of the traits that made him weak. His hatred for strategy and cunning manifested in Rome losing battles it could have won and they looked down upon those that had cautious/deceptive approaches to warfare. The 2nd Punic War was a meatgrinder unless Fabian or Scipio Africanus were in charge of the army. Fabian was met with mockery whenever he went out in public and the only reason Scipio wasn't was because by the time he took command, Rome was desperate enough to be as cunning as a fox that graduated from Oxford with perfect marks on the subject of cunning and got itself Phd on the field. Things were really bad and they didn't have to be.
He really shouldn't. She is technically his granddaughter and he truly cared for the Amazons. Other gods such as Gaia and some of the other Protogenoi should be her enemies. Maybe some Titans too.
You'll see batman in man of tomorrow. It's a surprise. They won't cancel it. Any projects currently in active development/production won't get cancelled. That's money money thrown out. They'll let them see light of day cause there's a chance it'll bring in some money that can help slowly pay off the merger.
Especially when you have Matt Reeves’s Batman 2 coming around the corner. My personal hunch is that if the merger happens, I could see the Ellisons/Paramount sticking with Reeves’s Batman instead of the DCU.

the last good show or movie that was super hero themes was My Hero, which is somehow more mature than your average comic book flick of late because it tackles real life societal issues with the villains, and how monsters can be made, and it doesn't even justify them, it just presents to you a monster, a villain, perfectly crafted by circumstance and societal faults.
