Hal was in the insanely popular Green Lantern: The Animated Series (another great show cancelled for no good reason). As I said before Guy is actually a pretty understandable choice when you consider the kind of characters that Gunn likes - comedic characters with a douchey side. John, if we're just going by his DCAU depiction, is just a stoic military black man which doesn't leave much to work with for Gunn's tastes.

Fair enough but I will point out that it was Gunn's choice, not the best choice.

I wouldn't put much stock in random TikTok clips (especially since I bet the guy that was coming in didn't even watch JL/JLU properly but just skimmed videos online otherwise he'd know that there are multiple human Green Lanterns). I hang out with a very sizable community of, let's say, nerd-adjacent people who aren't particularly aware of comics but want to get into them and I don't think I've ever met a single younger person for whom the default GL was John Stewart. Not a single one.

In my group, John is the GL. We grew up with him.

The Reeves Batman movie was the panacea for all this. It portrayed Batman as intelligent but not magically all-knowing, a highly-skilled combatant but could still be hurt, impressive and just-past-realistic gadets but retained verisimilitude, gifted but still learning

Him and Hal were in competition for the ring, but Hal won out as we was closer when Abin Sur dies. The original story was a what if tale, with the main conclusion being that Hal would always end up as the Green Lantern due to Gardner being such a poor choice that he inevitably loses the ring. Hal is obviously prideful of this fact, but did go out of his way to make friends with Gardner so he could be closer to his would-be replacement. Later Stewart would shove Guy to the 3rd in line position for GL choices on Earth.

Guy himself is a strange case as he grew to be very popular with DC fans given he was a main member of Justice League International, which is largely seen as one of the best JL runs - him (and others) only being selected due to tons of studio politics preventing practically every JL member besides Martian Manhunter and begrudgingly Batman (had to really fight for him) from being in the League. He is also known for Batman one-punch K.O.ing his ass for getting too uppity.

In terms of mainstream appeal, Batman Brave & The Bold is Guy's main showcase outside of the comics. Given how much that show loves International, he was extremely prominent.

Most 20 year olds today were only just born during the peak 2000s DCAU era and today's teens were born AFTER it. These are the primary intended demographics for capeshit films so I suspect it doesn't really make a difference whether you stick Gardner, Stewart or Simon Baz on-screen.

It depends on how young are we talking about. JL and JLU had younger audiences watching even if they we kids who were too young to understand everything that was going on. Both were easy to follow.

I am early 20s, and grew up with Stewart as the primary Lantern. The DCAU has long outlasted its cancelation and is firmly rooted itself as the base of DC. Most 20 year old DC fans are mainly interested in shows that came out 20+ years ago, from DCAU to Teen Titans to Brave & The Bold, etc.. Check out most DC YT channels, there all like Shady Doorags where the main content is old series.

DC hasn't had a major presence since 2015, arguably even earlier. The young kids these days don't care about them outside of whatever old series their parents or internet nostalgics thrust in front of them. The DCEU was a bomb, the animated films got progressively nicher, the CW quickly lost traction after Flash season 2, animated series barely existed, and their last high profile video games came out in 2017-2018. Nostalgia is the main driver keeping them alive at this point.

Especially Injustice, where zoomer fans missed the memo that it was supposed to be yet another alternate universe evil Justice League from another dimension, not meant to be the default versions of these characters. Evil Justice league is a trope we’ve had since the ‘60s, if not earlier. And the DCAU did it better.

That Justice Lord episode cast a long shadow. I know Evil Superman had already been done to death, but I think that's the one that really put the idea of Good Superman turning evil on the map, even though S:TAS had already done a similar plot.

First JLU picked it up for the two-season Cadmus arc. Injustice must have been inspired by it, but they made it really retarded and retooled it into Batgod wank. Directly or indirectly, it probably influenced Snyder's planned Evil Superman arc. The Gunnverse Superman also seems to be borrowing from the Cadmus arc and setting up a conflict between Superman and the government. Gunn's also doing something with The Authority, which iirc was named as an influence on JLU, so we've come full circle.

It's kinda the same with Frank Miller and DKR, and even Zack Snyder and BvS.

DCAU JL did the better Injustice (A Better World), the better Death of Superman (Hereafter), and even the better Tower of Babel (Starcrossed). Even though Batman was their favorite son, they never turned him into what the comics or Injustice did.

I have heard it before elsewhere that NetherRealm took direct inspiration from these episodes for the Injustice plot. Injustice is arguably a weird mix of it and Kingdom Come (same basic catalyst), but with all the shitty "DC needing to be edgy" writing of the New 52, post-Dark Knight era. While it has its moments, mostly with the characters outside the main Leaguers, it could have been a lot better.

Turning it into a Batman bankwank is made even worse since he was one of the evil Justice Lords. Credit where credit’s due—Batman was their golden boy, but even they admitted he might’ve been tempted. In fact, the non-evil Batman straight-up admitted his evil counterpart had a point. The Lords created a world where he wouldn’t have lost his parents, which even he found tempting.

In the DCAU, the one member who’d never have gone along with that and would’ve stopped them was Flash, ‘cause he was the heart of the team.

Meanwhile, in Injustice, Batman’s the only incorruptible saint who can do no wrong. Even his flash just went along with dictator Superman. Which, to be fair, wouldn’t be so bad if fans didn’t act like that’s how every other hero regularly is .I like Batman, don’t get me wrong, but Injustice is a story that only elevates him, and maybe his related characters, at the expense of everyone else.
