💼 Careercow Darrick Dishaw / Venger Satanis / Kort'thalis Publishing - Incompetent TTRPG Creator, Filthy Coomer, Chronic Stoner, and Lovecraftian Cult Leader with a Cult of Grognards

Might as well compile a few new happenings, since there's been a few recently.

Firstly, Darrick threw money to buy a dead IP known as Encounter Critical because he wants to LARP being successful. He then has the audacity to claim that he can make a smoother set of mechanics, ignoring of course that he couldn't even craft mechanics for things he lists in Cha'alt like psionics. He also regularly uses sorcerers as NPCs despite his "OSR lite" system not having them as a class. He also expects you to just use 5e and read his mind. Currently he's just shitting it up to make it another Cha'alt, because how else can he steal from Z-tier 80s movies and pretend he's smart.

Here's a nightmare of a video where he rambles about "play tests" of the new Cha'altified Encounter Critical:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=XiUHkNwAfM4
He also dumped a pair of articles to reaffirm to himself that he's totally a good game designer and puts thoughts and effort into them... ignoring that he has repeatedly slapped his games together. Some winning comments from it include:

Exactly like how a woke hack usually works. The resemblance is uncanny...

Not that Darrick can honestly and with any dignity explain with a straight face what these differences are. Much like "gonzo", it's just a verbal tic he spurts to defend his unfunny highdeas he steals from movies over 40 years old.

Imagine putting more time into planning the one shot than running said one shot. There's also the issue that whenever you deal with the past and dice, lady luck can break your internal logic over its knee.

Also I'm not kidding when I say he slaps his games together:

If you ever wondered why his cyberwear is only six options long and "other" is one of them? There's why. If you ever wondered why his encounters aren't well designed? There's why.

Anyways, here's a video of him subtly fuming and trying to get his pay pig cult to boost his ego over his uncreative and shittier take on Dark Sun getting mean reviews:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=3EPATruVhZI
And here he goes A-logging leeches. Reminder that he is an effectively jobless "house husband" whose daddy gave him a sinecure to pretend he's gainfully employed. And the only reason he makes up excuses about "working" is to refute the haters and due to having a tiny audience of almost none:

The review he is complaining about here is by Gabor Lux AKA Melan, author of the excellent Castle Xyntillan and the Echoes from Fomalhaut zine. His review was mixed, and the things he did criticize were things that - surprise! - were actually shitty. But this is what happens when Venger or RPGPundit get their work reviewed by someone outside of their incestuous OSR circle jerk. What a fucking crybaby. Lux's politics are pretty much in line with Venger's, which probably confused and angered ol' Darrick, and robbed him of the one flailing defense he has against criticism of his shitty, plagiarized book.

That's the thing; bad design or writing is bad no matter who writes it. Like Hard Wired Island, a book written mainly to appeal to the [Current Year] mob? Awful book fluff wise due to a lack of thinking about how these things from anime the designers liked were invented in his setting. No thoughts on how the space colony's economy worked, and why and how it got independent. But I can state it has a fairly solid system behind it; there was thought and care put into it that makes it functional and relatively efficient. A couple of modules of Thirsty Sword Lesbians actually was interesting or sort of effective as being a comedy, even if that book is horrid mechanically and leaks a skeevy vibe to it.

Darrick's drek, despite allegedly being based, doesn't really have any of that. He lacks worldbuilding, he lacks mechanics, and his writing style is ass and assumes you have ESP. I actually have found Christ Fields more of an RPG writer, and fuck Christ Fields.

As for Darrick now? He's mostly just uploading nearly incoherent highdeas on his YT. He made this 20 minute monstrosity trying to ramble his way into lore rather than nutting up and writing it down and/or editing things:

As for his Blogs? He let his "parody" one basically die other than begging for donations and making a literal lol random monkey cheese joke. His other one is mainly just LARPing that he's putting serious effort into making sure Encounter Critical will actually approach something like a real people game. Given that his "magnum opus" was Alpha Blue, and that barely counted as a game, I don't have a lot of hope. Actually his last few Blogs also are him desperately trying to shovel off the hoard of unsold Cha'alt books. Guess his poor wife finally is fed up with the piles of unsold shit and is withholding Didneyworl trips until he can get rid of some of the shit stock.

Since Darrick got brought up in the main Tabletop thread, I decided to take a quick look at anything new he might've done, and I'm not disappointed.

He's trying to force through a "Game Jam", (archive) which is definitely being done because of DnDone updating the OGL to be more shit. Idea's simple; for two weeks, Darrick will let any bumbo with a braincell make their own horrid booklets for Cha'alt.

Oh also apparently he shat out Encounter Critical III while I wasn't paying attention. He apparently at the very least used a d100 table for mutations this time:

More plagiarism from Dickhead, probably. I mean, I know multiple suns and moons are a staple of SF/Fantasy. But, once again, Darrick's shit is... oddly specific.

Two suns and seven moons, you say? Wonder where I've heard that before? Oh, yeah, 1986's Talislanta.

"Two suns and seven moons" has been a part of every edition of Talislanta since then. Again, could be coincidence, but, as always, it's hard to give Darrick the benefit of the doubt.

So, about Darrick's magical "Zoth" from his Cha'alt setting. It's a liquid, found in the Black Pyramid science-fantasy megadungeon, that has magical and chemical effects and can also lead to toxicity.

Dwimmermount, released 5 years before Cha'alt, was a science-fantasy megadungeon, with a liquid found inside that had magical and chemical effects, and could also lead to toxicity. It's called - are you ready for this? Azoth. I shit you not.

Fuck you Darrick you plagiarist.

Edit: oh, and I also found a room in ASE that has a giant checkerboard on its floor ("It's Not Checkers"), and lo and behold, Cha'alt has a room with a giant checkerboard on the floor ("Check Mate"). Yeah, a common enough trope, but still, with the amount of shit Darrick has stolen, well...

Of course he stole it from another game. God forbid that he ever make anything unique himself.

For those wondering; he's mostly just been trying to justify and invent excuses for why Cha'alt is this epic and glorious setting that he barely scripts out at all. It's to the point he's making a webcomic that I assume he will expect you to read so you can understand his next book. You know, the fourth book in a trilogy.

Oh and Neckbeardia tried to rationalize why his awful abortion book among his other works was good too. Absolute shitshow of a video, since it's obvious he's more trying to defend him for politics rather than his works. Also it's clear he's never read them in detail, and neither have the comments.

As for why I didn't really show his videos? Honestly he's coming off more and more schizo in them, probably due to taking more weed to respond to stress in life.

So, Darrick has a new book of GM advice out. Which is laughable, considering how utterly low-effort he is. It's a hundred pages, and all the art is by AI. I haven't read it, and I'mnot gonna, but appartently he gets on a soapbox about "misandry" and "mens' rights" in it. A purchaser called it out in the coments (quoting because I can't post pics since the keffalpocalypse):

Ugh I start to read this book and 7 pages in the author is complaining about feminism and the "off-the-charts" level of misandry in our culture. I guess people can think whatever they want to think but the axe-grinding has nothing to do with the article its attached to, and nothing to do with GMing like any sort of boss....

...I don't even really care if a game has a political message one way or the other. To each their own. But if one is just going to ham-fistedly inject their position on the "culture wars" in an article that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic, that's just bad writing.

And this is Darrick's defense, which I find utterly hilarious in light of the fact that he isn't even allowed by his wife to game in his own house...

Wanker Shitanus dijo:
It has everything to do with it. How are men supposed to GM like a fucking boss if they're constantly being used, abused, maligned, harassed, and scapegoated? You may not remember 5 or 6 years ago when several RPG articles and blog posts called us "white male terrorists." That came just as the social justice crowd started inserting themselves into the hobby. Would you disagree that our culture today is way more feminized than 10 years ago? I'd say that every decade or so, our entire society has become increasingly feminine to the point where men and masculinity are demonized. You can't live up to your full potential in such a climate, such a culture, which means you can't Game Master to the best of your ability when under such duress.

Imagine being so henpecked that you can't even manage to play D&D.

Jesus christ. I don't disagree with the sentiment, but politics shouldn't be in games. Just because they're my politics doesn't mean they're exempt. I get my weekly allotment of preaching and sermons at church, thanks.

Maybe he should just put that crap in the Forward. Take some inspiration from James Raggi.

I'm assuming he did, but that reviewer was saying page 7, and I can could believe Venger rambles for 7 pages abotu how much woke culture sucks and you need to fish your balls from your pelvis.

OTOH instead of having you do that man up to accomplish something useful, its so you can play coomer elf games.

I just realized something that makes Darrick's efforts to big up Cha'alt even more pathetic than you previously thought: he was beaten to the punch on every single level by Rifts.

Rifts literally is a post apocalyptic game where it blends all the aspects of the 80s and 90s at once and can get super cheesy and gonzo. You can fight the TMNT, play as a borged out Robocop, and team up with a drugged out Soda Popinski and solve Bigfoot crimes. You name something whack, it's there. Including Cthulhu as a Jabba the Hutt style dude ruling Atlantis.

Rifts does what Cha'alt wishes it could be.

I'm going to minority report (with a caveat):
Getting two dozen people together for gaming & gaming related stuff is how a good convention starts. When your groups get too big for the annex room at the library and you need to start looking at bigger spaces, it is its own success you can feel good about.

HOWEVER
those conventions don't act like less people than an airport shuttle is some gigantic success that owns the squares or w/e. The amount of masturbation this guy does over having fewer people than are in the line to use the pisser at gencon is nearly as cringe as the coomer adventure I'm sure this guy ran for the totally hetero jerk off game session.

Such an accomplishment! However I've seen TTRPG charity events in my parts that can bring in twice that amount. Hell, if I add all the people who didn't play D&D with one of the largest groups I've run I would have had close to 30 people. I would consider 100 people or more to be more successful just because of how hard it is nowadays to get a group of people together to game. Like LAN parties are all but dead. Wargaming groups are practically non existent at this point in most major cities. A lot of people would rather play their TTRPG games on a VTT.

There's also the matter that Darrick doesn't actually try to expand his market reach by appealing to non-OSR people and there's not a lot of variety. It's mostly just a monument to himself that he eats costs on purely for pride and to shovel off his unsold shit to people. It's never going to grow and become an actual con because of that.
