These tests don't signify all the variables of what would motivate you to choose the answers you did. Maybe you're a psychopath, or maybe you're being hard on yourself, or maybe you misinterpreted the question, etc. They're not particularly accurate.
Machiavellianism will always score higher on this forum than for the average population, because a big motivating factor for users here is that "stupid people get what they deserve".

No offense, but I think this is explained by your Aspergers, and not an accurate description of your actual personality traits.

This was sort of my suspicion. It also looks like there's a tendency for the quiz questions (at least the ones I got, dunno if it's from a pool) to try to attribute common negative personality traits to a psych issue. Lots of people are vain and self-centered, for example, it doesn't necessarily make them narcissists.

Exactly. Laypeople have a problem understanding the difference between an "unlikable trait", and "unhealthy trait", and a malignant trait or personality disorder. Thinking yourself nifty isn't a disorder even if it's irritating to others.
I think Machiavellianism isn't a stable trait anyway, it's just a worldview. Some of those questions are like "is it better to keep secrets?" Well fucking yeah, probably, but that doesn't mean I'm some pathological secret-keeper. For example.
I think Dark Triad ones are to make you feel special and mysterious. Oooh, I'm a scary psychopath like Dexter, oooooh.

Machiavellianism is also pretty situational. Like, if you're a stock broker or you work in sales or politics, being a bit of a lying, backstabbing shit is how you put food on the table. If you're a high profile actor, you'd better be a little narcissistic if you want to survive. If you're a career military man, a moderate amount of emotional distance from the world is a basic necessity. I think it's a little too easy to oversimplify the character traits without considering the people they're attached to.

I also don't think people appreciate that Machiavelli explained for the first time, in a manner accessible to laypeople (in Italian and not Latin despite its purported audience Lorenzo de Medici), the true nature of politics and how it worked. I think he intended and achieved a genuine public service.
Post-Machiavelli, politics is something comprehensible that can be reduced to practical principles.

Machiavelli also was important in the development of empiricism and thus science as he rejected classical ideas such as that being a good person made you happy because he looked at the world to see what the evidence supported

Just a random bit of info for anyone that cares: recently some groups've been pushing for a Dark Dyad instead, removing Narcissism, due to the general work towards interpreting narcissism as an unhealthy coping mechanism rather than simple grandiosity or egotism. Just FYI.
