I think it's a good thing that this has happened to him, for several reasons. Daniel's been disintegrating for years and clearly can't exist in the normal world at this point. This is not an insanity plea. Competency is the ability to understand things in the here and now. Insanity is the ability to tell right from wrong at the time of the crime.
The evaluation showed that he is incapable of understanding his legal rights or something along those lines. This is incredibly difficult to achieve. It puts him on the level of being unable to comprehend a child's version of "Listen to your lawyer and be a good boy when Mr. Judge is speaking."

Yeah, I figure it didn't take long for them to realize that Daniel's perception of reality is abysmally twisted, if not completely broken. He may never understand the situation he's in. There's unfortunately plenty of broken, homeless individuals walking the streets every day, but his case was unique in the sense where he had influence in his actions. I thought for sure someone would kill him one day or he'd die of something horrible. I hope he received adequate medical care there as well. His lifestyle was destroying his body.
