Cuphead - starring 30s visuals and 3 hours of jazz

Sorry for a bit of a necropost, but in case you didn't know Cuphead recently had a free big 1.2 update. The update includes multiple various additions, such as fully-animated cinematics instead of previously used stills; the ability to select between Cuphead and Mugman; translations to many various languages, with level titles hand-drawn by professional calligraphers and inspired by the cartoons of each respective country; new animations; various bugs fixes and tweaks and, seemingly, some secret enemies if you know how to get to them. Something to tide people over until Delicious Last Course is finished.
 
I recently picked it up on Switch and kinda love it. Kinda love it a lot.

But Dr. Kahl's bubblegum-blowing fagbot can go fuck himself. Every other boss has been a hoot though, even though some of them actually took me longer to beat. I hate how his fat area denial beam blocks my shots, I hate the way the inside of his bubble looks like a sphincter, I hate having to look at it so many times.

But seriously, A+++.
 
I loved the DLC. It's amazing to see how the team has improved their animating skills since Cuphead came out and every stage feels like eye candy. I think my favourite boss is Ester Winchester, but I'm kind of biased because she reminds me of Hilda Berg. The angel and devil fight was kind of the blandest to me.

Also I don't know how but they made a goddamn fat salt shaker more intimidating than Satan. Absolutely incredible.
 
I feel like Miss Chalice is kind of an easy mode for this game. I admit I will never pick the other guys again, her move set is so fun but the extra HP is a little bit overpowering.
 
I picked up the game and DLC for my Switch a few days ago (I played the vanilla version on my Xbox One X a few years ago) and I've been enjoying it, I'll admit I was a bit rusty from not playing it for a while and did terribly on the DLC for a bit.

It's in large part due to how Saltbaker is animated during those scenes and during his boss fight, it brings to mind a lot of Disney's old villains, especially The Coachman from Pinocchio. I also think that part of it is due to the twist coming out of left field even if Saltbaker's betrayal is obvious to more savvy players.

As soon as I saw the eyes I immediately thought of the Coachman too. They really like their Pinocchio references, don't they? Not that I blame them - that film is a work of art.

It didn't take me long to figure out Saltbaker was going to be the bad guy either. I had my suspicions but they were pretty much confirmed when I saw the tarot cards Mortimer uses in his attacks (Sun can mean friendship, Moon can mean travel and the Three of Swords can mean backstabbing/heartache).
 
I've listened to the OST and watched the fights and I'm really disappointed with the music. They clearly used the DLC to do more variety in their musical style, and that is the place to do it, but I don't like the results.

I would describe the Cuphead style as very brassy and driving/wild jazz that feels like it's constantly rushing around. It can play with different genres and instruments a bit (like the Latin in the flower fight, or the tap-dancing in Dramatic Fanatic), but it's all in service of this one feeling.

Glumstone the Giant: Most similar to classic Cuphead, but boring.

Snow Cult: Shit-tier. Bells and shaking instruments? Latin for a snow level? I mean, yeah, I get that the bells and shaking are probably for a Christmas vibe, but it does not PROJECT well.

Dog Planes: This one is, aside from the sheriff, the best song for listening to for its own sake. It's okay. Kind of neat how it has the guitar in it, though like Snow Cult it doesn't project well like brass and saxophones do.

Bootleggers: Okay, so I like the IDEA of having scatting in it (kind of like the tap dancing in Dramatic Fanatic), I just don't think it's done well. Listen to this:
That last two-ish minutes? That's how I'd have done scatting in a Cuphead song. Hear how brassy it is, really fast, real wild, it's wonderful. It has fighting spirit to it.

Sheriff: God tier, it's the exception that proves the rule because it's the most different from the old Cuphead songs, but actually keeps the spirit of them the best because while it faithfully uses country western, string-heavy music as the song, it has that chase-scene, wild feeling of Cuphead. It's great.

Dream Sequence: What the fuck is this? Yeah, they're going for sUpEr SpOoKy ethereal sounding horror stuff, but it doesn't feel cartoony, it feels like something from babby's first Cuphead creepypasta.

Chef: So frustrating, I do think the animation part of this is brilliant (the idea of the Chef torturing his anthropomorphic ingredients as attacks), and of course the demonic feeling (organs and spooky sound and all that) works for creating that feeling, but then there are these glimpses in here of this French-sounding violin thing, like a scarier version of gypsy jazz, and I just feel like that could have been a better theme to go with.

The King's Games: I kind of don't mind these because they're sort of separated off into their own weird thing, it's like how the mausoleums have their silly music and the run and guns also feel different, I don't mind this being different like it is.


I may have just had too high of expectations/too rejecting of any change, I just know I liked Cuphead's OST from the start but this I don't like that much.
 
Also double jump and rolling move are too good for run and gun levels
But those are just optional levels for coins so I guess devs just didn't care that much

By the way, I recant my opinions on the DLC soundtrack.
My expectations were just too high, the longer I listened the more liking I took to them. They still don't outdo the original soundtrack, though, except for High Noon Hoopla.
