But they already have. Branching paths for example. By choosing 1 path or route (in a romantic or general VNs) its still a choice that the player makes. Minigames like (Autism for mentioning it) Huniepop has match 3 but not its not required. Why? VN devs sell a story that you can chose (depending on the vn) the path and get the corresponding ending. So the main thing is Is the story intresting/good, are the character intresting/good. If both are shit then the vn is shit. It dosen't have gameplay to fall back on like say 3d rpgs/fpss and so on. And even with some gameplay/minigames along the way it stoll wont save it.

There is allways going to be shit. Shit with sprinkles but still shit.

Branching patches don't count, you have to go beyond CYOA because that's just dialogue choices.

You need to tie the game to actual gameplay mechanics, even if it's simple stuff like Broken Sword or hell even Myst. VNs get shit upon for this very reason because it has no gameplay to start with in a medium where gameplay is the defining feature and purpose that sets it apart from other forms of existing media.

Sticking an anime face over an empty void of a piece of software doesn't improve the quality.
