that there are many more murderers than we knew existed that really do appear to have pulled off one terrible act, then for whatever reason decided that they didn’t want to or couldn’t do it ever again, and went back to living normal lives, just with a dark secret they never revealed.
I won’t discount that. I am a bit cynical about most stories where faceless evil emerges from nowhere to smite an innocent for no obvious reason. There are just so many stories I’ve read over the years that turn out to be Elmore Leonard stuff once you get past the official stories they tell on Unsolved Mysteries with the approval of the next of kin.
The worst example I can think of is the Keddie Cabin murders. A family is staying at a remote campsite and someone unknown breaks in and torture/ murders them brutally, and disappears into the night, never to be heard from again. Total nightmare fuel! Reportedly the basis for the Strangers franchise. Still no arrests, forty years later! Terrifying, right?
Then I found out that the Keddie Cabins were basically a Northern California shithole full of year round losers for residents, and the victims were deeply unpopular with the neighbors, the mother was having an affair with a married man and the son was fucking around with drug dealing bikers. Yeah no shit they never solved the case. Nobody wants it solved.
Long story short when I place my bets on lowlifes rather than sickos, it comes up right more often than not.
Then I found out that the Keddie Cabins were basically a Northern California shithole full of year round losers for residents, and the victims were deeply unpopular with the neighbors, the mother was having an affair with a married man and the son was fucking around with drug dealing bikers. Yeah no shit they never solved the case. Nobody wants it solved.
What I read was the mother, Glenna Sharp, was being harassed by a male neighbor, and he wouldn't take no for an answer. She moved her family to Keddie to get out of a bad marriage, and wasn't interested in getting involved with someone else.
And one of the men allegedly involved had a family member who worked in the sheriff's department in the county.
It's been a few years since I've read anything about the case, but most of the witnesses are long dead, and all of the cabins have been torn down. I don't know what became of the children that were in the bedroom.
Next time Mr. Cheese and I take a ride up there, I will try to get some pictures.
The Death of Kendrick Johnson
Kendrick Johnson was a 17-year-old high school student at Lowndes High School Valdosta, Georgia, who was reported missing by his family after he didn’t come home from school on 10 January 2013. The next day, his body was found rolled up in a gym mat at the gymnasium at Lowndes High.
An autopsy was performed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), which stated that Kendrick had died from positional asphyxia from being upside down in the center of the rolled-up gym mat. The authorities theorized that he fell into the hole while looking for a shoe and died after being unable to get out, and thus declared Kendrick’s death an accident.
Kendrick’s family refused to accept this theory, and believed he had been murdered. So they received court approval to exhume his body and perform a second autopsy. This second autopsy determined that he died from blunt force trauma to the neck.
After this finding, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia agreed to reopen the case. The office announced that it would not be pursuing criminal charges against anyone in Kendrick’s death. But the Johnson family were still convinced that it was a murder. So in 2015, they filed a $100 million lawsuit against 38 people, including several law enforcement agents, the high school, and the crime lab who processed the evidence. The case was later dismissed, and the court ordered Johnson family to pay over $300,000 in attorney fees to the defendants named in their lawsuit.
But the Johnsons still believed that their son was murdered, and that his organs had been removed and replaced with newspaper. In actuality, Kendrick’s organs were removed, but likely by the funeral home during the embalming process. But the Johnsons still claimed that Kendrick’s organs were removed before he was rolled up in the gym mat.
Kendrick’s body was exhumed for the second time for a third autopsy, and this time an independent autopsy. This came after the family believed that the high school’s surveillance cameras had footage cut out in an attempt to cover-up the real cause of Kendrick’s death. The results of the third autopsy once again concluded that he died from blunt force trauma. They blamed Brandon and Brian Bell, two brothers who were friends with Kendrick and the son of an FBI agent. Law enforcement officers broke into the home of the Bell family and asked them questions. But they weren’t arrested, put on trial, and sent to jail, despite Kendrick supporters believing they murdered him.
But the common theory is that Kendrick’s death was an accident, and that he suffocated due to getting stuck in the gym mat. While Kendrick’s shoulder width was 19 inches, and the center of the rolled-up gym mat was 14 inches, the gym mat was stretchy enough to fit Kendrick. But it was still narrow enough to squeeze him so that he would get stuck. Kendrick got into a rolled-up gym mat standing upright, and got stuck. In an upside down position, his body weight would compress his lungs, and blood pooled in his head, causing a lack of oxygen to his lungs.
The mortician in the case even testified this was done with the young man's brain. After a death, brain matter turns into a soupy mush very quickly, and you don't want liquefied brain matter leaking out of the corpse during funeral services.
Some funeral homes use newspaper, some use disposable diapers, others use a more specified type of absorbent material.
I'm not an expert in these matters, just read too much about morticians and how they prepare bodies for funerals.

That was in 2007. I think the general consensus now is that Andreas Gruber killed his family, hung around for a few days, then Schlittenbauer came to the house for whatever reason and upon discovering the crime scene, killed Andreas.
As I understood it, she saw the properly seedy side of the entertainment industry and was (rightly) horrified, that she saw it as essentially blood money.

I’ve remembered finally it was Paul Holes, who worked in the GSK case when D’Angelo was caught, who went into the findings I mentioned. I’ll find a podcast example later today and link it. I’m a bit iffy on him, simply because of how far he leaned into the notoriety after D’Angelo was arrested, but he also hadn’t seemed slimy.
When searching about the idea of suspected serial victims turning out to be one off killings, there are plenty examples, but there doesn’t seem to be any articles or papers written specifically about it. There probably needs to be more time to determine how true it is as genetic genealogy used in police work becomes more accessible.
I have to revisit this (sorry I Dumb'ed you, ZsaZsa, but I hate that this case is still active and it riles up my dyspepsia every time, because there is no evidence of foul play or conspiracy). The family framed Kendrick’s death as a “racist crime” and called him “the Emmett Till” of his generation. They had a rally and invited Al Sharpton to get involved. There was a documentary put out about his case.
Yeah Kendrick's death is clearly an accident. Guess his parents should have bought him a locker so he didn't need to use a rolled up mat to store his shoes. Whole things seems preventable if you ask me.

Holes seems to have made up or exaggerated quite a few details, like him talking about how he was going to confront DeAngelo at his house on his last day as law enforcement or how there was evidence the Vasilia ransacker wasn't GSK when eventually it was proven they were the same person.
Law enforcement in general was really slimy with this case like how they illegally gave evidence and crime scene photos to a random journalist (Michelle McNamara).
Also everyone who tried to FOIA information about the case was denied except the former district attorney thien ho who totally didn't get preferential treatment.
They didn't solve anything. They did a what-if based on modern police tactics. Problem with that is that the murders happened nearly 90 years before that and the case they were deliberating was based on by its very nature flawed information. I hesitate to say the original police(s) mishandled the case, they just did what they figured to be correct and did interview a lot of people for years. Any future view of the case would however be limited by which information they choose to gather (often objectively poorly) and choose to preserve (often objectively poorly). Not to mention the students had only a few weeks, no archival training and obviously didn't access all files available on the case.
They weren't the first to point fingers at Schlittenbauer, it's just that internet sleuths (I mean this term as a slur) jumped on it because the whole model of "who would modern police go after" validated their beliefs. There's hours of reading on the hinterkaifeck wiki, all of it a waste of time as its just ruminating on trains of thought the police who initally gathered said information already followed. That is excluding the hours of "facts" people made up during the century after the event.
It's a fantastic mystery as there is a precisly 0 % chance of us ever knowing who did it. I'm personally partial to it having been a complete outsider.
It doesn't add up. Gruber kills his family, Schlittenbauer arrives after, kills Gruber with the same weapon the latter used atop of the latters victims, cares for the animals, leaves and doesn't tell anyone, waits until the mechanic alerts him that no one's around on the farm, sends his sons to check, they return and then Schlittenbauer goes with two other men and "finds" his and the inital victims. Easier to assume it was Schlittenbauer the whole way then answering all the questions this opens up.

There's a few stories out there of people who got wedged behind freezers/coolers, and couldn't get out. Or attempting to break into a home by going down the chimney.
There's another one of a thief trying to break into a store, fell into a decorative pillar headfirst, and suffocated. He wasn't found until his body began decomposing and stunk up the store. I want to say it was in Arizona, but I'm not sure.
Weird and tragic, but it DOES happen.
