Creepy Unsolved Mysteries - From unsolved murders to unidentified people to unexplained supernatural events, what are some of the creepiest unsolved mysteries you've ever heard of?

Investigators and the coroners that did the toxicology report listed the cause of death it as "cocaine toxicity" however there was no residue found in the nose as you would think. As well the amount of cocaine that was in his body was massive, it wouldn't of have been possible for him to walk 10 feet from his house, let alone the body being found 150 feet from his backdoor.

Mind you, he wasn't a coke user as he worked in little league, and the people that he worked for stated that he would not be within 15-30 feet of these children if he was such a hardcore druggie.

The state of the body was in when they found it you'd think that it was an overdose, but a body wouldn't be that emaciated within the 2-3 days to when he disappeared to when the body was found.
Many hardworking resonsible men with a job that involves some duty to preserve other lives, go fucking hard on their time off. Doctors, Lawyers, Pilots, and Surgeons are present at every drug den and often form little secret ones all their own so that they don't have to talk to any stupid people. There are wildly responsible guys who've never missed a day of work at a retail job and never run out of clean socks who could fucking kill you if you tried to keep up with them on the three days off in a row that they give themselves every month. "I know my brother, he'd NEVER cheat/murder/smoke a j! NEVER!"
Everything else the investigators claim about cocaine is easily circumvented as well, and in addition to that depends on which tests they did on the dead guy. Don't forget how poorly non-medics are able to relay/transcribe statements they hear from healthcare professionals. Have you ever heard the difference between what a medical interpreter will say vs. when the patient's son is translating? Actually mindblowing.
All UFOs are either hallucination/mass hysteria, or an experimental aircraft. If I was the president I'd absolutely encourage it and release the alien files and say we saw aliens instead of whatever actually happened.
Witkowski's a manic schizo crank. Trust me, game knows game.

I also wouldn't expect a pedo principal to observe the death rituals afterwards, but a killer with no personal hatred towards Chaim might do so in a twisted form of "respect".
This isn’t out of respect for him but for Halacha, Jewish law. That means the suspect is an Orthodox Jew who doesn’t want to risk G-d’s wrath but yet thinks killing a child is okay.
It's very odd to me how no students who knew Chaim have come forward in the past nearly forty years.
It’s not odd at all that religiously observant Jews want to keep this all in house. Snitching means they’ll be outcasts.

That's true. I suppose what I was referring to was the enormous passage of time between Chaim's murder and now; you'd think someone who professes faith (even one as retarded and rule-bending as modern Judaism) would grow a conscience in forty years and give Chaim's family some peace of mind and secure justice for a murdered child. Chaim's classmates likely have children and grandchildren themselves by now - is being part of a community that buries the murder of its own worth staying in? Somebody has to know something, or at least have a suspicion that if followed up on could bring closure to this case. I have no understanding of the psychology behind these communities at all.

The clannishness attributed to all Jews is a stereotype. But for the ultra-Orthodox sects it's often pretty true. The insular, fanatical ones insist on nothing being shared outside the tribe.

Forty years is nothing to the type of Jew who got educated at a yeshiva. These are the types to consult rabbinic texts written in 1750 by a rabbi who lived in Vilnius about an ethical dilemma that happened today in 2026.

Yep, these are the types who are pissed off that Chaim’s family even shared their story with the outside world. They will never know what happened to their son as a result.

Sigrid Barginde, an 87 year old woman living alone, was found dead in her Chicago home on June 26th, 1981. Her hands had been tied behind in her back with a tan scarf; medical examiner Wayne Carver determined that she had died of a heart attack and even suggested she had tied the scarf herself. There were no signs of forced entry into her home.

The whole thing sounds like a cross between the film Lady In A Cage and the Hinterkaifeck murders. I've read a few other cases of sickos hiding in houses tormenting people and killing them. Wasn't there a suspected serial killer who traveled by train in the late 19th-early 20th century? Multiple families were found dead after reporting strange goings on in their houses.

Lady In A Cage is a film about a disabled woman who gets stuck in her cage elevator during a power outage. Thugs break into her house and torment her and steal from her. I wouldn't be even remotely surprised that something like this could happen in real life. The fact that the police didn't believe her baffles me. Did they think she was senile?

A possible explanation for the shadowy figures could be Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Lack of visual feedback due to partial blindness or complete blindness after being previously sighted causes your brain to make things up to fill the void. My grandmother had it and would see similar things. She almost got a diagnosis of mental illness before an eye doctor realised what was actually wrong.

Anyone interested in the Hinterkaifeck case from 1922, there's some interesting stuff on hinterkaifeck.net, memoirs from the youngest Schlittenbauer son, etc.

When you're linking to wikis that any random can alter or edit, it's a good idea to, at minimum, provide an archive link or screen capture taken at the time of reference, in case the information you're vaguely referring to is completely wiped three minutes after posting.

Also, a summary for the bilingually impaired would be appreciated. I'm currently running the website through machine translation and it's giving me a huge fucking headache.

Today marks the 40th year anniversary of the assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme.

The assassination is still unsolved four decades later. There are so many theories surrounding this case, I think it's only rivaled by the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Michelle Lyn Hundley Smith went missing in 2001 from a Kmart in West Virginia. She just resurfaced in North Carolina. Apparently it was on a drunk driving charge and she wants absolutely nothing to do with her family. It is odd.
Then she got arrested and taken into custody anyway for an outstanding warrant for missing her court date before she went into hiding. Fucking hilarious.

TFW I was going to post about Danny Goldman but it looks like they may have figured out what happened to him so I need to find someone else-

Dorothy Distelhurst was 5 years old when she went missing on September 19, 1934. She had left school to walk to her home in east Nashville, but never arrived home. Authorities searched for Dorothy over the following days, but they found no trace of Dorothy, and no other evidence. She disappeared wearing a blue-and-white plaid dress and carrying a pink lunch pail.

Dorothy's case got more media attention. The Distelhursts began receiving multiple ransom notes. It was never determined if they were genuine or fake.

However, the most well-known of the ransom notes has been widely discussed. In this one, the writer threatened to burn Dorothy's eyes out with acid if $175,000 was not paid to them.

On November 13, 1934, Dorothy's remains were found buried under a flower bed in the corner of the Davidson County Tuberculosis Hospital. Her skull had been crushed, and her face had been destroyed by acid. Her clothes and lunch pail were found a while away.

Her killer has never been identified.

I'm fascinated by old cases but the downside is I can't find much about this story.

Could her ransom be related to poverty from the Great Depression? Since it was the 30s it could be possible. They may have been wealthy. (but I am seeing local comments claiming they weren't.)

Either way, the poor girl. Such an awful death.

These photos are apparently of Dorothy:

Dorothy's dad worked at a publishing house apparently, so not a wealthy man. According to the archived NYT articles I could find a large iron spike with hair entangled in it was found approximately twenty-five feet from where her body was found, possibly the murder weapon. According to Dorothy's medical examiner Hermann Spitz she had been contained in a cardboard box for weeks before her initial burial, and some cardboard as well as pieces of a man's shirt were found near her initial grave. Snatch-rackets were a definite phenomenon during the Depression, but not so much in middle class white neighbourhoods. Dorothy could have been the victim of a misidentification by her abductors. She could also have been killed for common and depraved reasons with the acid ransom note being a red herring. Sad case either way.

I need to find the comments from her alleged family member who gave a tiny bit of information on it. It was suggested that they kidnapped the wrong girl so they just killed Dorothy.

The fact that her last moments were being killed by acid, and to do that to a five year old. It's one of the worst stories I've ever read.

From this:

I bet she was just trying to have fun but the way the photo was taken makes it so creepy. They found a scale in the motel room so I figure she died of an overdose and they just never identified her. I really hope she gets her name back soon!
She got her name back today! She is Becca Mallekoote, she was 18 years old, and today is her birthday. Here are some pictures of her when she was alive.

On the evening of the 18th of November, law enforcement officers conducted a welfare check at the family's mobile home after Russell Keith Dardeen, aged 29, failed to report to work. Inside the residence, officers discovered the bodies of Ruby Dardeen and the couple's son. Ruby Dardeen, who was 30 years old and pregnant at the time, had sustained fatal injuries that resulted in premature labor. The infant was also found deceased at the scene.

Keith was not present at the residence. Investigators initially considered him as the primary suspect. However, the following day, his body was discovered in a nearby field, and his death was ruled as homicide. He had been shot and suffered genital mutilation. His vehicle was found parked near the Benton police station. Forensic analysis indicated that he had been killed within approximately an hour of his family.

Residents of Jefferson and Franklin counties, already concerned after more than ten local murders in the preceding two years, experienced heightened fear following the incident. Some residents armed themselves, while others reported psychological distress. Early speculation suggested the killings might have been linked to Satanism, but investigators quickly ruled it out along with other potential motives, including those related to drug trafficking, marital infidelity, or gambling. Forensic examination of the crime scene also indicated that rape and robbery were not factors.

No suspects were officially identified in the quadruple homicide until the 2000s, when serial killer Tommy Lynn Sells, following his conviction and death sentence for the murder of a teenage girl in Texas, claimed responsibility for the crime. However, he was never charged, as prison authorities in Texas would not permit him to leave the state to assist police in Southern Illinois with their investigation. Both law enforcement and members of the Dardeen family expressed doubts about his account of the killings, as Sells had a documented history of making false confessions.
