The issue with Spikes casting is the age. Cho is near 50. Spike is 27-28/late twenties in the series.

So yes. That is an issue. But Cho is a professional and not a spastic asshole so people overlook it. Which is okay. I like Cho.

All in all the casting is a mess from top to bottom and it is apparent they did not care about being accurate to the series or the creators vison at all.

Fuck Netflix to sum this rant up.

Edit: Grammar
yeah this
he's pretty good on sporting the asian jewfro poof hair, but he's legit about twenty years too old for TV Spike
normally you could at least handwave it of "they've gotten older" but, yeah. bang.

Cho at least acknowledges the issues, and has a positive outlook on what's going on, which is all anyone can really ask for from the actors. I just think it's sad that he had to get involved with Netflix for this series, he definitely could've still had a chance if anyone else was doing the adaptation. And hell, it's possible that out of all Spike candidates, he was the best choice, though it also sounds like there weren't other auditions or something for the roles. Who knows?

Pineda's bitchiness and being unable to keep her mouth shut may have done the series more harm than good since it's been proven time and time again insulting your audience doesn't put their butts in seats. Netflix doesn't care, though, if they've greenlit scripts for a second season ages ago.

I don't like the casting choice of Cho, but I'll give him credit where it is due:

He got himself in shape for the part, and is very aware about the criticism of his age while understanding why fans wouldn't like it. He admitted to being hesitant about taking the role because of his age, and then proceeded to say that he liked the script so much that he ultimately wanted the job. He's being a professional, which is more credit than I can give to other Hollyweird types these days.

Side note: It's really hilarious how Cho had to get ripped for the part immediately since the very first episode has a scene or two with him being sweaty and shirtless ... But they can't let Faye look like Faye because of "male gaze." Yeah, really funny how that works ...

The difference between Cho and Pineda is night and day.

Of course, one gets hailed as "YASSS KWEEN SLAAAY" while the other gets ribbed for his age. Fuck this modern state of socmed; Pineda is a disgrace and no one should be cheering for her.

I can't fault a guy for being like "I know I'm not right for the role, but Netflix dumped a pile of money on my lap so I said yes." Its the producer's fault for casting someone who's too old, too short and not the right body type for the role, not Cho's. And its Pineda's fault for being a massive cunt.

This reminds me that I don't own Cowboy Bebop on Blu-Ray ... Is the Blu-Ray set worth owning, or is it the same quality in just an updated format (because Blu-Ray releases do this shit all of the time lol).

I still have my 20 year-old Bandai DVDs that I will never get rid of.

Stick with what you got until you find a blu-ray copy priced to where spending a few shekels for it wouldn't bother you. As you got the seriously OOP Bandai copies hang on those as they're keepers.

I'll keep that in mind next time I go to Half-Price and see the individual Cowboy Bebop DVDs, then. Not that the FUNimation re-release DVD is bad, but if the Bandai copies are better, I'll keep an eye out for those.
Yeah, Funimation changed up the fonts in the opening, for some odd reason, when making the HD version. It's not a big deal, but it's something I got used to when AS had it back in the day.

It's now been 20 years since I first laid eyes on Cowboy Bebop, that's just crazy to think about.

I can name only two instances of a live action adaptation of a Japanese Anime/Manga/Whatever that worked

Edge of Tomorrow: mostly because it did its own thing and still kept AYNIK's spirit
And Alita, which I'm amazed even worked.
Speed Racer was pretty good.

Cho seems pretty not-spastic
So dang refreshing, good on Cho.

His take on anime and race is pretty thought provoking.

Speed Racer was pretty good.
As bad as the Wachowski's have become and how overrated the matrix trilogy was, Speed Racer was seriously underrated and its a shame that one of the only solid live action anime adaptations got bodied because critics couldn't handle the CGI.

Cho has always seemed to be a very chill actor in general and doesn't seem to have been adopted the undeserved massive ego's that most other actors get when they start working in Hollywood.

Its also patently false unless you take the position that any slightly tan anime character is actually from osaka black.

If the servers were less shitty right now, I could post a dozen examples, but I'm going to leave you with a picture of the black character from One Punch Man.

Ironically enough, he’s actually not black, despite what appearances might suggest. Flashbacks of him as a kid show him with light skin, he’s just heavily oiled and tanned.

Yeah Cho honestly is how I think most actors who have a professional outlook on things tend to act when they do these projects. He was miscast but I can respect the man.

But you nailed it for blaming the producers as a thing with casting is that it's mostly the producers who are at fault rather than the actor's, and actors would normally just roll with it. But Pineda really just hurt the show's chances and her reputation by acting out the way she did.

But let's thank her for helping the show tank unless somehow it gets a second season like how Death Note (Netflix Edition) is allegedly getting a sequel.

I'm guessing that season one will end on a cliffhanger introducing or mentioning her as setup for the second season. They want to prolong the outrage and have more PR fuel when the second season comes around.
I can see the writers contriving some sort of cliffhanger where the Bebop gets hacked or the team is stranded somewhere and they receive some shitty Marvel movie tier call from Ed with her silhouette being shown to try and grab fanboys attention.

Cho at least looks the part in terms of height and appearance I suppose. Pineda I would've assumed was an OC or some side ho for the crew if I wasn't told otherwise. I mean seriously does Netflix have no one in their arsenal of potential actresses that at the least had tits?

@Corpun Reply doesn't work but that post credits scene is probably the most cliche idea possible that I can see these hacks doing it if they want Ed in the show.

As for Cho he honestly could've worked as an older Spike as well if they wanted to make the show an alternate what if story instead of the shit that happened. Also Netflix only cares about strong wahmen who also can look like boys.

Cho seems to have a good mindset for the role. Pineda, I only saw her tiktok or whatever that went viral and it made me chuckle. Thing about Faye is, she's practically impossible. The list of tall, buxom, Asian women who can actually act is not large. I honestly can't think of any.

To put it another way... this probably IS going to suck, but I don't think it will necessarily be the cast's fault.
