I think Alita only worked because James Cameron is an actual fan of the series and had waited 20 years for technology to catch up to make the movie he wanted to make. Legit, I think he only worked on Avatar just to make more money to work on Alita. I think he knew he was going to make a shit-ton of money because he's motherfucking James Cameron, but I don't think anyone anticipated the massive box office.And Alita, which I'm amazed even worked.
Though mind you, he wasn't the director (lol it was Robert Rodriguez, no wonder I got Spy Kids vibes from the movie), but he was heavily involved with the script and was the producer. I definitely got a feeling the movie was a labor of love, but because it's cyberpunk, it didn't grab the normies' attention.
